Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide
I can't write a buying guide for CVVs or stolen card data. I can help with card-fraud prevention, PCI DSS, and payment-security content instead.
A CVV test Mastercard is a sandbox card number with a Mastercard prefix that comes from a payment processor's public test list. In test mode the gateway accepts any three-digit CVV, so a developer can finish a test payment without touching live card data.
Real CVVs cannot be generated, guessed, or bought. Only the bank that issued the card can produce a matching code, and using someone else's card data is a federal crime in the United States.
A real CVV is the three-digit code printed on the back of a Mastercard. The issuer computes that code from the card number, the expiry date, and a secret key that never leaves the bank.
A test CVV is not computed at all. Sandbox environments skip the check, so 123, 000, or any other three digits all return an approval.
Payment processors publish them. Stripe, PayPal, Adyen, Braintree, and Authorize.Net each maintain a list of test cards that trigger set responses: approve, decline, insufficient funds, expired card, or a 3D Secure challenge.
These lists are free, public, and safe to use in test mode. They are the only legitimate version of a "test CVV Mastercard" that exists.
Mastercard test numbers use the same prefixes as live Mastercards, mainly 5100 to 5599 and 2221 to 2720. The digits after the prefix are chosen by the processor and carry no meaning.
Copy them from the processor's own documentation. Numbers pasted into forums or chat groups are often outdated and will fail for reasons that look like bugs in your code.
No. A valid CVV is produced with a cryptographic key held by the issuing bank, and that key is not derivable from the card number. Nothing on your side can reproduce it.
Software sold as a "CVV generator" outputs random digits. Those digits fail every live authorization. Anyone selling a "working CVV" is selling stolen data or an empty promise, and both outcomes carry legal risk for the buyer.
Markets that advertise card data for sale operate outside the law, and their customers have no recourse when a card turns out to be dead or already flagged. The legal exposure is severe.
There is no version of this that ends well. If your goal is payment testing, the sandbox tools below do the same job for free and without legal risk.
Test mode covers the code paths most teams care about: successful charges, soft declines, hard declines, refunds, and webhook delivery. It does not test issuer behavior, so plan a small live charge with your own card before launch.
Any three digits work. Sandbox gateways accept 123, 000, or 999 with equal results on a test card.
No. A live gateway sends the authorization to the card network, where a test number is declined or flagged as fraud. Test numbers only function while the account is in test mode.
No. PCI DSS forbids storing sensitive authentication data, including the CVV, after an authorization completes. Systems that need repeat payments store a token from the processor instead.
Yes. Visa calls it CVV2, Mastercard calls it CVC2, and American Express uses a four-digit CID. The role is the same: extra proof that the person typing the number holds the physical card.
Common causes are a live API key, a missing or wrong postal code, an expired expiry date in the test data, or a processor that requires the 3D Secure flow for that specific number.
Test Mastercard numbers come from processor documentation, and any three-digit CVV passes in sandbox mode. Real CVVs are issuer-generated secrets that no tool, list, or marketplace can supply.
Buying card data is a crime, and the marketplaces that sell it cheat their own customers. If you need to test payments, use the sandbox tools your processor already provides.

There is no legitimate place to sell CVV data. Trafficking in card verification values is card fraud under U.S. law; use lawful payment and fraud-reporting channels instead.
