Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Test Form Guide: Sandbox Testing With Test Card Numbers

A CVV test form is a checkout page running inside a payment processor's sandbox, where published test card numbers stand in for real ones so you can verify card validation, decline handling, and 3D Secure flow end to end. The top pick for most teams is Stripe's test mode: it pairs documented test numbers with deterministic decline codes and simulated authentication, so every error path is reproducible. The criteria that matter here are narrow. No real card data ever touches the form, the processor publishes its own test numbers, decline and retry paths behave the same way twice, and 3D Secure can be simulated without a live issuer.

CVV Test Form v10: Sandbox Testing Guide

This guide covers sandbox testing only. Buying, selling, or validating card numbers you do not own is card fraud, and nothing below helps with that.

cvv test form v3

What a test form actually has to prove

A payment form has more failure modes than most teams expect, and a sandbox card number exercises all of them at once. Before you pick a tool, list what you need to see fail on purpose.

cvv test form v5

  • Card number length and Luhn checksum handling, including a clean rejection message
  • Expiry validation against the current month and year
  • CVV field accepts three digits for most brands and four for American Express
  • Decline codes map to plain-language messages your support team can act on
  • Retry after a soft decline does not create a duplicate charge
  • 3D Secure challenge renders, times out, and completes
  • Tokenization returns a reference you can store instead of the card

Option 1: Stripe test mode

Stripe documents a set of test card numbers, including the widely used Visa number 4242 4242 4242 4242, plus specific numbers that trigger particular decline codes. You get success, generic decline, insufficient funds, and expired card scenarios from a single sandbox key.

cvv test form v4

  • Pros: deterministic outcomes, documented decline codes, simulated 3D Secure, test clocks for subscription billing, no application review to start
  • Cons: the card element styling and behavior differ from other processors, so form logic tied to Stripe Elements will not port cheaply
  • Use case: most teams building a new checkout, and any team that needs to test recurring billing or authentication flows

Option 2: Adyen and Braintree sandboxes

Both offer a test environment with simulated outcomes, and both let you force a CVV or postal code mismatch result so you can see how your form responds to an AVS or CVV rejection rather than a flat decline.

  • Pros: closer to enterprise acquiring setups, useful if you already route volume through either processor, strong support for local payment methods
  • Cons: account setup takes longer, and sandbox credentials often arrive after a business review
  • Use case: merchants already contracted with one of them, or teams that need to test regional payment methods alongside cards

Option 3: A local mock for form logic only

If you only need to test your own validation rules, skip the processor. A small local stub that returns canned responses lets you run hundreds of cases in a test suite with no network dependency and no credentials in CI.

  • Pros: fast, offline, easy to assert against, no secrets in the build pipeline
  • Cons: proves nothing about the real processor's behavior, and a stub that drifts from the live API produces false confidence
  • Use case: unit tests for Luhn checks, formatting, and error copy, paired with at least one real sandbox for integration tests

Keep real card data out of scope

The point of a test form is that no live card number ever enters it. Storing card data pulls your system into PCI DSS scope, and the standard expects you to protect it and minimize retention. Tokenization exists so you never hold the number in the first place. If a colleague pastes a real card into a staging environment, treat that as an incident, rotate the key, and check the logs.

Pre-launch checklist

  1. Confirm sandbox credentials are separate from production keys and never committed to the repo
  2. Walk every documented test card through the checkout and record the result
  3. Force a decline, a CVV mismatch, and a 3D Secure challenge, then verify each message
  4. Check that no card number appears in logs, analytics, or error reports
  5. Run the same suite against production with a real low-value card you control before launch
