Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Test Field v3: How Sandbox CVV Checks Work

What is a CVV test field v3?

A CVV test field v3 is the card-verification box on a checkout form filled with sandbox test data, so a developer can check that the field accepts a value, rejects a bad one, or passes the order through before the gateway goes live. It holds no real card data. The "v3" tag most often marks the third revision of a test form or a test-data set inside a staging build.

cvv test field v3

Payment processors publish test card numbers and test CVV values for this purpose. The field exists to test code, not to check a cardholder.

How a test CVV field works

In live mode the CVV goes to the issuer, gets matched against the record on file, and a mismatch can kill the sale. In test mode the gateway fakes that check against rules written for sandbox traffic.

cvv test field v2

  • Live key: the value leaves your server and gets verified by the card network.
  • Test key: the value gets checked against the processor's sandbox rules and returns a canned response.
  • Decline simulation: some processors tie a specific CVV to a specific error code so you can trigger a failure on purpose.

The form field looks the same in both modes. A three-digit input, a label, and a length check. That is the whole surface area.

CVV Test Field v7: What It Means and How to Test It

Which values go in a CVV test field?

Visa, Mastercard, and Discover use three digits. American Express uses four. Any digits inside those lengths pass in most sandboxes.

  • Three digits: 123, 456, 999. Fine for a passing test on a Visa test card.
  • Four digits: 1234 for Amex test cards.
  • Brand-specific values: read your processor's test data page. Some map 000 to "CVV not matched", others map a specific code to "CVV not processed".

Wrong-length input should fail at the form level before the request leaves the browser. Test that path too, since it is the one real users hit.

Field names and formats you will meet

Processors label the CVV input in different ways, and the name your code posts matters more than the label a shopper sees.

  • cvv, cvv2, cvc, cvc2: the three-digit codes on Visa, Mastercard, and Discover.
  • cid, card_code, security_code: the four-digit code on American Express.
  • String vs integer: most APIs want a string, and a leading zero gets lost if you send a number.

Check the API reference for the exact key before you debug anything else. A renamed field is the quietest failure in the stack.

Why a test CVV field rejects a value

Most test failures come from setup, not from the CVV logic.

  1. Live keys are in the config. The gateway tries to verify a real card that does not exist.
  2. The card brand and CVV length disagree. Four digits on a Visa field fails a client-side check.
  3. The field name does not match what the API expects, so the value never gets sent.
  4. The test card expired. Test numbers carry fixed expiry dates that age out.
  5. A 3-D Secure step sits in front of the authorization and swallows the response.

Log the full request body in staging. In most cases the CVV is present and the failure sits somewhere else.

Setting up a test card flow, step by step

  1. Switch the account to test mode and confirm the publishable and secret keys both carry the test prefix.
  2. Pick a published test card number from your processor's docs.
  3. Fill the form with a future expiry, any name, and a CVV of the right length.
  4. Submit and read the response code, not just the UI message.
  5. Repeat with a bad CVV to confirm your error handling shows the right message.
  6. Repeat with a card that triggers a decline so you can watch the failure path end to end.

Run the same set of cases on mobile. Autofill and numeric keyboards break CVV fields more often than desktop browsers do.

Test data is not card data

Test numbers are public. They appear in processor documentation and get pasted into repos, tickets, and QA sheets without risk.

Real card numbers never belong in a sandbox. Storing one, even to see if it works, pulls your test environment into PCI DSS scope and creates a data set that has to be protected, logged, and audited.

Keep the two apart with separate keys, separate config files, and a check that blocks live keys in local builds.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CVV test field v3 safe to keep in a public repo?

Yes, as long as it holds published test values only. The moment a live key or a real card number sits in the same file, the repo becomes a liability.

Does the test CVV have to match the test card number?

In most sandboxes, no. The CVV gets checked against length and simple rules, not against an issuer record. A few processors tie a specific CVV to a specific result, so read their test data page first.

What does "v3" mean in the field name?

It is a version tag. Teams add it when a third revision of a form or test-data set ships, so old fixtures do not get loaded by mistake. It means nothing to the card networks.

Can I test a CVV mismatch without a real card?

Yes. Most processors publish a CVV value that returns a mismatch code, and some publish a card number that fails the CVV check on every run. Use those instead of a live card.

Why does my test CVV field pass in the browser but fail in the API?

The form and the API call are two separate paths. A client-side length check can pass while the API request drops the field, sends it as a number instead of a string, or posts it under the wrong key.
