Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Test Cases for QA: Sandbox Validation Guide

The short answer

The top pick for most QA teams is a table-driven CVV suite built from your payment processor's sandbox test cards, not a hand-written case for each card brand. Score it against four criteria: field format and length, issuer response mapping, retry and lockout behavior, and the PCI boundary that keeps the verification value out of logs and databases. Each section below covers one criterion, what it catches, what it misses, and when to run it.

Criterion 1: Field format and length

The CVV (also written CVC or CVV2) is three digits on most cards and four digits on American Express. Treat the field as a string, because leading zeros are valid and an integer cast will silently drop them.

CVV Negative Test Cases: Practical Payment Testing Guide

  • Three digits accepted for Visa, Mastercard, and Discover.
  • Four digits accepted for Amex. Three digits rejected with a clear message.
  • Values with leading zeros such as 001 and 0123 accepted and echoed back intact.
  • Empty, one digit, and five digits all rejected, ideally with the same wording so you do not hint at card type.
  • Pasted spaces, hyphens, and trailing whitespace trimmed before validation runs.
  • Non-numeric characters blocked at the input layer, not just on submit.
  • Full-width digits and Arabic-Indic numerals rejected.
  • Autofill from the browser populates the right field on iOS and Android.

Pros

  • Runs in a few seconds with no processor dependency.
  • Catches the majority of regressions introduced by checkout redesigns.
  • Works in unit tests, component tests, and end-to-end runs.

Cons

  • Proves nothing about how an issuer or gateway actually responds.
  • Duplicate coverage if your UI library already enforces the same rule.

Use case: gate every front-end pull request on this suite, and run it again before any release that touches the payment form.

Criterion 2: Issuer response mapping

Gateways return distinct CVV result codes, and each one needs a defined user experience. Common codes include match, no match, not processed, not supported, and not applicable. Sandbox test cards from your processor let you force each state without using a live card.

CVV Field Validation Examples: A Comprehensive Guide

  1. Match: order proceeds. Confirm no extra friction step appears.
  2. No match: the transaction is declined or flagged. Verify the message tells the customer to recheck the digits without revealing that the card exists.
  3. Not processed and not supported: confirm your business rule, either accept with a risk flag or decline, and that the rule is the same in test and production config.
  4. Unknown or unmapped code: the system fails closed, never open.

Pros

  • Tests the real decision path your production code uses.
  • Exposes gaps in mapping tables that format tests never touch.

Cons

  • Sandbox behavior can differ from production for some acquirers.
  • Requires test credentials and network access in CI.

Use case: run before every release and after any gateway, acquirer, or routing change.

Criterion 3: Retry, lockout, and velocity

Real customers mistype. Test what happens on the second, third, and tenth attempt with a wrong value on the same card and from the same session. Confirm the counter, the cooldown, and the message. Verify a successful retry clears the counter, and that clearing cookies or switching devices does not reset a server-side limit.

Use case: run with your fraud and risk team in the loop, since the threshold is a business decision rather than a code decision.

Criterion 4: Data handling and the PCI boundary

PCI DSS treats the verification value as sensitive authentication data and prohibits storing it after authorization. QA is where leaks surface first, so write cases that hunt for the value after submission:

  • Query the orders and payments tables for the digits.
  • Search application and web server logs for the field name and the value.
  • Inspect the APM trace, error reporter, and analytics events for payload capture.
  • Check browser local storage, session storage, and the cache after a declined attempt.
  • Confirm the field is not repopulated when the customer returns to the form.

Use case: run on every build that changes logging, tracing, or error handling. A passing format suite means nothing if the value lands in a log aggregator.

Sandbox test data

Pull test card numbers and their expected verification outcomes from your processor's published sandbox documentation. Never build cases from real card data, screenshots of customer cards, or values copied from production traffic. Mask anything that reaches a bug report.

Common mistakes

  • Storing the CVV in the test database seed and then asserting on it.
  • Treating the field as numeric, which breaks leading zeros.
  • Testing only the happy path and skipping declined and unsupported codes.
  • Sharing one test card across parallel CI jobs, which makes retry counters nondeterministic.

Recommendation

Start with the format suite because it is cheap and fast, then add issuer response mapping, then the data-handling checks. If you can only fund one, fund the PCI boundary cases. They are the ones that turn a checkout bug into a compliance finding.
