Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Test Cases for QA: A Practical Validation Guide

CVV test cases for QA verify that a card verification value field accepts 3 digits for most cards and 4 for American Express, rejects non-numeric or out-of-range input, masks the value in the interface, and leaves no trace of the value after authorization. A complete suite covers format, boundary values, error handling, security, and cross-browser rendering, not just the happy path.

cvv input validation test cases

What should a CVV test case suite cover?

Coverage splits into four layers: input format, user interface behavior, server-side validation, and data handling after the payment call. Skipping any layer leaves a gap that either breaks legitimate checkouts or exposes sensitive authentication data.

  • Boundary and equivalence class input

  • Masking, logging, and storage behavior
  • Accessibility and mobile keyboard types

Which CVV test cases are mandatory?

These cases catch most real defects and map cleanly to acceptance criteria.

  1. Enter 3 digits for a Visa, Mastercard, or Discover card. Expected: field accepts input and submission succeeds.
  2. Enter 4 digits for an American Express card. Expected: field accepts 4 digits when the BIN resolves to Amex.
  3. Enter 2 digits, then submit. Expected: inline validation error, no gateway call.
  4. Enter 5 digits. Expected: input is blocked at max length or rejected on submit.
  5. Enter letters, symbols, or spaces. Expected: characters are stripped or rejected.
  6. Paste a value from the clipboard. Expected: paste is sanitized the same way as typed input.
  7. Submit an empty CVV. Expected: required-field error naming the CVV specifically.
  8. Submit a valid-format but incorrect CVV. Expected: gateway decline message that does not confirm which field failed.
  9. Inspect the browser network tab and application logs after checkout. Expected: no CVV value in any payload, log line, or analytics event.
  10. Verify the field renders as a password or masked input with autocomplete disabled for the CVV field.

How do you test CVV length and format?

Use boundary value analysis and equivalence partitioning rather than random typing. The interesting points are 2, 3, 4, and 5 digits, plus non-digit classes.

more on this topic

  • Lower boundary: 2 digits
  • Nominal: 3 digits
  • Amex nominal: 4 digits
  • Upper boundary: 5 digits
  • Invalid class: alphabetic, alphanumeric, whitespace, unicode digits, leading zeros

Leading zeros matter because a value such as 007 is valid and must survive conversion to a numeric type or string handling without truncation.

How do you test CVV security and data handling?

PCI DSS treats the CVV as sensitive authentication data that must not be stored after authorization, so QA should test the negative case directly. Confirm the value never appears in database columns, queue payloads, application logs, crash reports, or third-party analytics.

Also verify that the field uses an appropriate input type, that the mobile keyboard shows a numeric pad, and that the value is cleared when the user navigates away or the payment fails.

Which error messages and interface states need coverage?

Error copy should tell the user what to fix without leaking card details. Test the states below on desktop and mobile.

  • Empty field on blur and on submit
  • Too-short value with the expected digit count shown
  • Non-numeric characters with a specific correction hint
  • Gateway decline, network timeout, and duplicate submit
  • Field disabled while the request is in flight
  • Screen reader announcement of the error text

What test data should QA use?

Use the synthetic test card numbers published by your payment processor, and pair them with their documented test CVV values. Never use production card data in a test environment, and never copy a real cardholder value into a ticket, screenshot, or chat thread.

Frequently asked questions

Does CVV validation differ by card brand?

Yes. Most brands use a 3-digit value, while American Express uses a 4-digit value. The field should adapt based on the detected card brand, or accept 3 to 4 digits and validate on submit.

Should the CVV field always accept 4 digits?

Accepting 4 digits keeps Amex users unblocked, but a hard 4-digit rule will fail 3-digit cards at the gateway. Dynamic length based on BIN detection is the safer pattern.

Can QA test CVV behavior without a live gateway?

Yes. Stub the payment service response and assert on the request payload, field state, and error rendering. Reserve live sandbox calls for end-to-end decline and approval paths.

Is client-side validation enough for CVV?

No. Client-side checks improve the experience, but the server must revalidate length and format before calling the processor.

Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide

I can't write a buying guide for CVVs or stolen card data. I can help with card-fraud prevention, PCI DSS, and payment-security content instead.
