Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Test Cases for Payment Forms: Sandbox QA Checklist

Your payment processor's published sandbox test-card set is the top pick for CVV test cases, because it is the only source that returns a real authorization response for a security-code mismatch without touching live card data. The criteria that matter are narrow: the test data must trigger a CVV-specific response and not a generic decline, it must cover every brand you accept, it must run in an environment that cannot settle funds, and it must be repeatable so a failed run can be replayed exactly. The guidance below is written for developers and QA engineers wiring up card forms.

Why CVV bugs survive to production

The security code is the field teams test least. Card numbers get checked against Luhn, expiry dates get calendar pickers, and the CVV field often ships as a plain three-digit text box. That works until a customer pays with American Express, pastes a code from a password manager with a trailing space, or types on a phone keyboard that refuses digits. Sandbox cards solve the authorization half of the problem. They do nothing for the input-handling half, so both need separate cases.

cvv input validation test cases

Option 1: Processor sandbox test cards

Pros

  • Returns real response codes, including a CVC check failure, so your decline and retry logic gets exercised.
  • Documented per brand, which makes coverage easy to audit.
  • Free, stable, and safe to commit to a test fixture file.

Cons

  • Tied to one processor. Switching gateways means rebuilding the fixture set.
  • The number of CVV-specific test cards is small, so repeat runs can mask flakiness elsewhere.
  • Some sets only cover Visa and Mastercard, leaving Amex and Discover untested.

Use this when you need to prove that a CVC check failure produces the right message and that a corrected code can be resubmitted on the same order.

Option 2: Gateway test vaults and tokenized profiles

Pros

  • Stores a test card token, so you can rerun a checkout without re-entering numbers.
  • Covers the tokenization path your production code actually uses.
  • Good for subscription and stored-credential flows where the CVV is collected once.

Cons

  • Setup takes longer than copying a card number.
  • Vault behavior differs by gateway, so it does not port cleanly.
  • Can hide bugs in the raw form field, since the token skips the input step.

Use this for saved-card and recurring-billing tests, not for first-pass form validation.

Option 3: Self-generated Luhn-valid numbers

Pros

  • Fast for fuzzing a form field, including hundreds of input permutations.
  • No dependency on a sandbox or network connection.

Cons

  • Never produces a real authorization response, so it cannot test a CVV mismatch.
  • Easy to mistake for end-to-end coverage when it is only input coverage.

Use this for front-end validation only: length, character set, and paste behavior. Pair it with Option 1 before you sign off.

The test cases worth running every release

  1. Brand length: three digits for Visa, Mastercard, and Discover, four for American Express. The field should adjust when the brand is known.
  2. Non-numeric input: letters and symbols are rejected, and the field does not silently drop digits.
  3. Leading zeros: 000 is a valid code, not an empty string.
  4. Paste and autofill: a code pasted with a trailing space passes after trimming.
  5. Whitespace only: a field of spaces fails validation instead of submitting.
  6. Length cap: a fifth digit is blocked or rejected, never truncated after submit.
  7. CVC check failure: a sandbox card that returns a security-code failure shows a message distinct from a generic decline.
  8. Retry: the customer can correct the code and resubmit without losing the cart.
  9. Mobile keyboard: the field requests a numeric keypad and still accepts paste.
  10. Logging: the entered code appears in no database row, log line, analytics event, or error trace.

Storage boundaries you must not cross

PCI DSS treats the CVV as sensitive authentication data and prohibits retaining it after authorization, even in encrypted form. That means your test plan should include a negative check: search application logs, database dumps, and crash reports for the code you entered and confirm zero hits. A form that validates perfectly but writes the code to a debug log has failed the test. Test cards and sandbox credentials are the only card data that belong in a repository, and production card numbers should never appear in a test environment.

Recommendation

Build your suite on processor sandbox cards for authorization behavior, add a small self-generated set for input fuzzing, and keep a gateway vault profile for recurring billing. Run the ten cases above on every change to the payment form. If a bug reaches production, it is almost always in cases three through nine, not in the authorization call.
