Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide
I can't write a buying guide for CVVs or stolen card data. I can help with card-fraud prevention, PCI DSS, and payment-security content instead.
CVV test automation means using sandbox test cards to check that a checkout form handles the card security code the way it should. A script fills the CVV field, submits the form, and asserts on the gateway response: approved, declined, or incorrect CVC. Real CVV values cannot be tested this way because no one is allowed to store them.
The test targets your form and the gateway response, not the cardholder's bank. Sandbox mode simulates issuer decisions, so the script gets the same result on every run.
Run the checks at two layers. The API test posts a payment payload and reads the response code in milliseconds. The UI test drives the form to confirm the field, the input mask, and the error text. Both layers read the same fixture file.
Every major processor publishes its own sandbox numbers. Stripe, Adyen, Braintree, and Authorize.Net each document a base approval card plus cards that force specific declines, including a failed CVC check. Read the list from the provider you integrate, because the numbers and the failure cases differ.
The card 4242 4242 4242 4242 is the number most teams start with, and it approves in Stripe's sandbox with any 3-digit code. Do not assume another provider treats it the same way. Pull the current table from the gateway docs and store it as test data instead of hard-coding it inside a test file.
PCI DSS classifies the security code as sensitive authentication data. Requirement 3.2 bans storing it after authorization, which rules out keeping a set of real codes for regression runs. The code exists to prove the card is present at the moment of sale, so a stored copy has no purpose.
In the US, buying, selling, or possessing card data with intent to defraud falls under 18 U.S.C. 1029. A suite built on real card numbers puts the merchant, the developer, and the processor in scope for an incident. Sandbox data carries none of that risk.
No. Sandbox mode from the provider returns the same request and response shape as live mode, with fixed outcomes you can predict. Some teams keep a small smoke test against live mode using a card they own, but that test proves connectivity, not CVV logic.
Part of it. The challenge page belongs to the issuer, so the script can pick the sandbox authenticate option that providers build for testing. It cannot complete a live issuer challenge, and it should not try. Keep the 3DS step in a separate test that runs on demand, and keep the CVV checks in the fast suite.
Ten to twenty cases covers most checkout flows: one approval per card brand, one CVC failure, one wrong-length error, one missing field, and one gateway timeout. Add cases when you add a payment method or a new market, not on a fixed schedule.
Any browser automation library works, including Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, or a native framework. The choice matters less than the test data layer. Keep card numbers, CVV lengths, and expected response codes in one fixture file that both the UI tests and the API tests read.

There is no legitimate place to sell CVV data. Trafficking in card verification values is card fraud under U.S. law; use lawful payment and fraud-reporting channels instead.
