Why this guide is not provided

The request asks for instructions on testing CVV codes to see whether card data is usable. A CVV, or card verification value, is a security credential issued by a bank to its cardholder. Testing CVVs in bulk, on merchant checkout pages or against payment gateways you do not own, is card testing. Card testing is a form of payment fraud, and it causes real harm: stolen funds, chargebacks, closed merchant accounts, and identity damage for the people whose cards were used. No guide on this site will explain how to run such tests, where to source card data, or how to keep them from being detected.

What CVV data actually is

The CVV is sensitive authentication data under the PCI Data Security Standard. Merchants may use it to authorize a single transaction but are prohibited from storing it afterward. That rule exists because a stored or resold CVV is the raw material of fraud. Any marketplace advertising CVVs for sale is selling stolen credentials, and buying from one exposes the buyer to legal liability, not just financial loss.

Legitimate work that resembles this request

There are honest tasks that sound similar, and they are worth naming so the difference is clear.

  • Accessibility testing of a payment form you own or are contracted to audit, checking that labels, error messages, and the CVV field work with screen readers, keyboard navigation, and autofill.
  • Integration testing in a sandbox provided by a payment processor, using the test card numbers that processor publishes for exactly that purpose.
  • Fraud prevention research, such as studying velocity checks and CVV mismatch rates in aggregate, without handling live cardholder data.

What can be written instead

If the goal is a guide on making a checkout page accessible under WCAG, or a plain explanation of why card testing harms merchants, that is a reasonable article and can be produced. If the goal is to validate real card numbers, the answer is no. Anyone who has received unsolicited card charges should contact their bank and report the issue to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
