CVV Test 2026: CVV Basics and the Law on Card Testing

A CVV is a 3-digit code on most cards. American Express prints 4 digits. The code sits on the card face, not in the magnetic stripe and not in the chip. Issuers use it to confirm that the person entering a card number also holds the physical card.

The term "CVV test" describes a different thing in practice. It means sending many card numbers through an authorization request to learn which numbers work. That activity is card fraud. It is also the reason this page contains no method, no tool list, and no vendor names.

Legal status in the United States

18 U.S.C. 1029 covers fraud and related activity in connection with access devices. Buying card data, selling it, and running authorization tests on cards a person does not own fall inside that statute. Maximum terms run to 10 years for a first offense and 15 years for a later one, with fines on top. State laws add separate charges.

How issuers and networks respond

Visa and Mastercard set rules that prohibit merchants from storing the CVV after authorization. Acquirers watch for authorization patterns that look like testing. A common signal is many small charges from one IP address or device across many card numbers in a short window.

The FTC tracks card fraud reports through its Consumer Sentinel database. The FBI collects carding complaints through IC3. Both are public.
