Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Sale for Carding Purposes: Why It Is Illegal

A "CVV sale for carding purposes" means selling stolen card verification values to someone who plans to use card numbers they do not own. The sale, the purchase, and the use of that data are federal crimes in the United States under access device fraud, identity theft, and wire fraud law. There is no legal version of this transaction.

What does the term actually mean?

The CVV is the three-digit code on the back of most Visa, Mastercard, and Discover cards, or the four-digit code on the front of an American Express card. It exists to prove that the person typing a card number holds the physical card.

related article

Carding is the practice of running stolen card numbers through online checkouts, gift card purchases, or resale channels to convert someone else's credit into cash or goods. Sellers market bundles of card data. "Fullz" packages add the cardholder's name, address, phone number, and sometimes a Social Security number.

Is it legal to buy or sell CVV data?

No. United States law treats card data as an "access device," and trafficking in access devices is a felony.

  • 18 U.S.C. § 1029 covers producing, selling, and possessing access devices with intent to defraud. Prison terms run to 10 years, and longer when the offense involves large volumes or repeat conduct.
  • 18 U.S.C. § 1028A covers aggravated identity theft and adds a mandatory two-year sentence on top of the underlying fraud count.
  • 18 U.S.C. § 1343 covers wire fraud, which applies because carding moves over the internet and phone networks.

State prosecutors stack on charges for larceny, forgery, and computer crimes. Buyers get charged alongside sellers, and courts read bulk purchases as proof of intent.

Why most CVV shops are scams in both directions

Carding markets run on anonymity, which makes them a natural home for fraud against fraudsters.

  • Many "shops" take cryptocurrency, deliver nothing, and close the domain within days.
  • Some log buyer IP addresses, wallet details, and shipping addresses for resale or extortion.
  • Others sell numbers that banks have already canceled. Reissued cards turn old data into dead data.

Buyers have no recourse. A person who paid for stolen card data cannot file a complaint about a purchase that failed, and reporting the theft exposes them to prosecution.

How card data reaches these markets

Most stolen card data comes from breaches, phishing, and skimming. Attackers compromise merchant checkout pages, inject scripts into payment forms, or trick people into typing card details on lookalike sites.

The haul lands in bulk files that trade between criminal groups. Nothing in that chain involves the cardholder's consent, and victims often learn about it from a fraud alert.

What carding costs the people whose data is stolen

  • Time: disputing charges, replacing cards, and updating automatic payments across dozens of accounts.
  • Credit damage: unpaid fraudulent balances can reach collections before they are removed.
  • Repeat risk: a leaked card number often gets sold more than once.

Federal law caps consumer liability for unauthorized card charges, and most issuers reissue within days. The real cost lands on banks and merchants, which pass it back to everyone through higher fees and tighter checkout rules.

Does a CVV alone let someone use your card?

For many online checkouts, a card number, expiration date, CVV, and billing ZIP code are enough to complete a purchase. That is why card networks push tokenization, which swaps the card number for a one-time code, and 3-D Secure, which adds a bank verification step.

Businesses that store raw card data take on heavy compliance duties under PCI DSS. Most avoid the risk by letting a payment processor hold card data instead.

How to protect your cards

  • Turn on transaction alerts for every purchase above a small threshold.
  • Use virtual card numbers for subscriptions and unfamiliar sites.
  • Lock your card in the issuer's app when you are not using it.
  • Check card readers and checkout pages before typing details.
  • Review statements each week, not each month.
  • Use a unique password for every retail account and turn on two-factor authentication.

What to do if your card data is exposed

  1. Call the issuer and ask for a new card number.
  2. Dispute every charge you do not recognize, in writing.
  3. File a report at IdentityTheft.gov to get a recovery plan.
  4. Freeze your credit with the three major bureaus if your Social Security number was part of the leak.
  5. Report the incident to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center.

What are the legal options that do the same job?

Companies that accept payments or pay vendors have legitimate tools. Payment processors handle card data under contract and PCI DSS rules. Business spend platforms issue corporate virtual cards with preset limits, and network tokens keep real card numbers out of merchant systems.

Those options cost less than a fraud case. A federal conviction blocks many licenses and jobs in finance, and it stays on a record for life.
