Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Negative Test Cases: A Practical QA Checklist

CVV negative test cases verify how a payment form reacts to invalid card security codes. They confirm that the system rejects blank, short, long, non-numeric, and mismatched CVV values without charging the card or leaking the code. A complete set covers field validation, boundary values, gateway responses, and data storage.

cvv test scenarios for checkout

What counts as a CVV on each card network?

Visa, Mastercard, and Discover print a 3-digit code on the back of the card. American Express prints a 4-digit code on the front. Networks name the field CVV2, CVC2, CID, or CVV depending on the brand.

Your form must accept 3 digits for most cards and 4 for Amex. Test both lengths. A hard-coded 3-digit limit breaks Amex payments and produces a false decline at checkout.

CVV Test Cases for Payment Forms: Sandbox Values and Validation Checks

Why run negative tests on a CVV field?

  • Wrong input handling causes lost sales. A form that rejects a valid code stops a paying customer.
  • Weak validation opens the door to injection, cross-site scripting, and card-testing fraud.
  • PCI DSS forbids storing the CVV after authorization, and only a test can prove your system obeys that rule.
  • Gateway decline codes must map to a clear customer message. Silent failures confuse buyers and support staff.

CVV negative test case checklist

Empty and missing input

  • Submit the form with the CVV field left blank.
  • Submit the field containing a single space.
  • Send an API request with the CVV parameter omitted.
  • Send the parameter with a null value.
  • Send the parameter with an empty string after a prior valid entry.

Length boundary values

  • 1 digit and 2 digits (below the minimum).
  • 3 digits (valid for Visa, Mastercard, Discover).
  • 4 digits (valid for American Express).
  • 5 digits and 10 digits (above the max).
  • A 100-character string to check for a buffer or truncation bug.

Character and format checks

  • Letters only, such as abc.
  • Mixed alphanumeric, such as 12a4.
  • Symbols, such as @#$ or 12-3.
  • A decimal value, such as 12.3.
  • A negative number, such as -123.
  • Leading zeros, such as 012 (this one should pass).
  • Leading and trailing whitespace, such as 123 .
  • Non-ASCII digits, such as Arabic-Indic ١٢٣.
  • An SQL fragment, such as ' OR '1'='1.
  • A script payload, such as <script>alert(1)</script>.
  • An HTML entity version of a valid code, such as &#49;&#50;&#51;.

Mismatch and gateway decline cases

  • A well-formed code that does not match the card number supplied.
  • A sandbox card number that forces a CVV failure response.
  • A card that returns "unable to verify" instead of a clean pass or fail.
  • A card that returns "not processed" when the issuer skips the check.

Gateways return a code with each authorization. Stripe reports a cvv_check value of pass, fail, unavailable, or unchecked. Older systems return single letters: M for match, N for no match, P for not processed, U for unavailable, S for should have been present, and X for no response.

CVV Field Validation Examples: A Comprehensive Guide

Storage and logging cases

  • Confirm the CVV is absent from every database table after authorization.
  • Confirm the CVV is masked or trimmed in application logs.
  • Confirm the CVV is never returned in API responses or webhooks.
  • Confirm the CVV does not appear in session files, crash dumps, or error traces.

Search the database and log files for the exact test code after each run. This single check catches most PCI violations, because engineers add debug logging during development and forget to remove it.

User interface and session behavior

  • Refresh the page after a failed attempt.
  • Press the browser back button and resubmit.
  • Copy and paste a code with hidden characters.
  • Let the browser autofill the card details.
  • Open the numeric keypad on a mobile device.
  • Retry after a decline and confirm the form asks for the code again instead of reusing a stored value.
  • Submit many failed attempts in a row and check for rate limiting.

How do you run these cases?

  1. Use a gateway sandbox with published test cards, never a live card.
  2. Map each test card to the CVV response it triggers, then write one case per response.
  3. Record the input, the expected result, and the actual result in a table.
  4. Inspect the database and the logs after each run.
  5. Repeat the whole set for every card brand your store accepts.

Which mistakes show up often?

  • Testing one card brand and assuming the rest behave the same.
  • Accepting exactly 3 digits for Amex.
  • Checking field format but ignoring what the gateway returns.
  • Logging full request bodies that include the security code.
  • Relying on client-side validation alone. A request sent straight to the API must fail on the same rule.

Frequently asked questions

Should a CVV mismatch block the transaction?

Card networks let merchants accept the charge and carry the risk. Many storefronts treat a mismatch as a soft decline and ask the customer to re-enter the code. That decision belongs to your risk rules, not to the payment form.

What CVV should you use in a sandbox?

Sandbox gateways pair fixed test card numbers with codes that force each response. Most 3-digit values pass. Your provider publishes the short list of codes that produce a mismatch, so pull it from their documentation.

Does CVV validation belong on the client or the server?

Both. Client checks give fast feedback and cut failed submissions. Server checks enforce the rule and protect the data. Keep them in sync, because a mismatch between the two frustrates users and hides bugs.
