Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

CVV Input Validation Test Cases: QA Checklist Guide

CVV input validation test cases verify that a payment form accepts only the digit lengths a card brand permits, rejects every other input, and never stores or logs the value. A complete suite covers four areas: format rules, boundary values, negative and hostile input, and PCI DSS handling requirements. Testing the field in isolation matters because the CVV has no checksum, so length and character rules carry the whole validation load.

cvv negative test cases

How CVV validation differs from card number validation

A primary account number follows ISO/IEC 7812 structure, so it can be checked with a Luhn calculation and a brand identification range. The CVV has none of that. There is no algorithm that confirms a three or four digit code is plausible, which means your test cases cannot rely on a checksum to catch typos. Validation reduces to three questions: is the value numeric, is the length right for the detected brand, and is the field handled safely from entry to authorization response.

Format and field level test cases

  • Three digit values accepted for Visa, Mastercard, and Discover.
  • Four digit values accepted for American Express.
  • A three digit value rejected when the detected brand requires four digits.
  • A four digit value rejected or flagged when the brand allows only three.
  • Letters, spaces, hyphens, and punctuation rejected by both client and server validation.
  • Leading zeros accepted, so 007 and 0012 pass as normal values.
  • All zero values accepted at the format layer, since format is not authorization.
  • Input capped at four characters with no overflow into hidden state.
  • Full width Unicode digits rejected, since back ends rarely normalize them.
  • Pasted values behave exactly like typed values.

Boundary and length test cases

Boundary testing on the CVV field is short but easy to get wrong, because the valid length depends on another field. Run each of these against a three digit brand and again against a four digit brand.

CVV Negative Test Cases: Practical Payment Testing Guide

  • Empty value, single digit, and two digits all rejected.
  • Exactly three digits and exactly four digits tested at the edge.
  • Five digits, ten digits, and a 1,000 character string rejected without a server error.
  • Length revalidated when the user switches the selected card brand after typing.
  • Payload size limit enforced server side so oversized input cannot exhaust resources.

Negative and hostile input test cases

  • SQL metacharacters, quoted strings, and comment sequences in the field.
  • Script tags, event handler attributes, and encoded character entities.
  • Null bytes, line breaks, and tab characters.
  • Emoji and mixed script text.
  • Negative numbers and decimal values.
  • Repeated submissions of the same value to confirm no duplicate authorization attempt.
  • Error messages that describe the problem without echoing the entered value.

Security and compliance test cases

PCI DSS treats the CVV as sensitive authentication data, so the field is subject to rules that go beyond ordinary form validation. Confirm that the code is never written to a database, a log file, an analytics event, or a crash report after authorization completes. PCI DSS Requirement 3.2 prohibits storing sensitive authentication data after authorization, and Requirement 3.4 addresses display and masking. Practical checks include:

test cases for cvv field

  • The field is masked during entry and blocked from browser autofill and form history.
  • The value is transmitted only over TLS and never placed in a URL query string.
  • The value is excluded from session storage and client side state dumps.
  • Server side validation repeats every client side rule, since client checks can be bypassed.
  • Masked value or a token, not the code, appears in confirmation screens and receipts.

Test data and automation notes

Use processor sandbox cards for positive cases so test values never resemble real accounts. Structure cases as data driven rows with the brand, input value, and expected result, which keeps brand specific rules in one place when they change. Add one accessibility check to the set: the field should declare a numeric input mode so mobile keyboards offer digits, and it should announce a clear error to screen reader users. Finally, test with a real device keyboard at least once, because paste, autofill, and key repeat behave differently from simulated events.
