Start with a simple rule: any unexpected pattern of CVV verification failures, repeated low-value authorization attempts, or card testing bursts should trigger a review of payment logs, rate limits, and access controls.

What a CVV attack IOC is

A CVV attack indicator of compromise is a measurable sign that someone is probing or abusing card verification value checks. Common examples include many declined authorization attempts from one IP range, repeated card numbers with different CVVs, and rapid account creation tied to checkout attempts.

What to look for

  • Spikes in CVV mismatch declines across a short window.
  • Many small authorization attempts followed by a large one.
  • Checkout traffic from proxy networks or known bad IP ranges.
  • Repeated card numbers paired with changing billing details.
  • Automated form fills that skip normal customer behavior.

Risk bands for triage

Use bands to prioritize. Low: isolated CVV declines from a single customer. Medium: clustered declines from one subnet or device fingerprint. High: sustained card testing across many cards and accounts. Critical: confirmed data exposure or successful fraud after an IOC alert.
