Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Credit Card Verification Tool: What It Checks and How It Works

A credit card verification tool is software or a payment service that checks the card details a customer submits against records held by the issuing bank. In most cases it validates the card number, expiration date, billing address, and the card verification value (CVV or CVC) before a transaction is approved. It confirms that the data is consistent and the account is open, but it does not prove who is using the card or whether the cardholder authorized the charge.

What a verification tool actually checks

Each field on a card carries information that a processor can test. A verification tool runs those tests and returns a response code the merchant can act on.

Credit Card Validation Tool Guide: Find Where to Buy CVV

  • Card number format. A Luhn check confirms the digits are mathematically valid, and the bank identification number (BIN) shows the issuing bank and card type.
  • Expiration date. The date must match what the issuer has on file and must not be in the past.
  • CVV or CVC. The three-digit code on the back of Visa, Mastercard, and Discover cards, or the four-digit code on the front of American Express cards, is compared with the issuer record. A mismatch usually means a declined or flagged order.
  • Billing address. Address Verification Service (AVS) compares the street number and ZIP code the buyer typed with the address the issuer has.
  • Cardholder authentication. Some flows add a bank challenge, such as 3D Secure, where the shopper confirms the purchase in a banking app or with a one-time code.

Types of verification

CVV and CVC checks

This is the most common single check. Because the code is not printed on receipts or stored by the merchant, it is treated as proof that the person entering the details has the physical card.

Address and ZIP verification

AVS is widely used in the United States and Canada. It returns a partial match in many cases, so merchants usually combine it with other signals rather than relying on it alone.

3D Secure and step-up authentication

The issuer asks the shopper to verify identity during checkout. A successful result shifts some fraud liability away from the merchant under the card network rules.

Tokenization

Instead of storing a card number, the payment provider stores a token that stands in for it. Future charges use the token, which reduces the amount of sensitive data a business holds.

How a typical check runs

  1. The customer enters card details at checkout or through a payment gateway's hosted form.
  2. The gateway encrypts the data and sends an authorization request to the processor.
  3. The processor routes the request to the issuing bank through the card network.
  4. The issuer returns a response that includes whether the card is valid and whether the CVV and address matched.
  5. The merchant receives an approval, decline, or referral code and decides whether to capture the payment, hold the order, or ask for more information.

What a verification tool cannot do

A verification tool cannot tell you whether a cardholder authorized a purchase, and it cannot detect whether a card number was obtained from a data breach or a stolen wallet. It also cannot replace fraud scoring, velocity limits, or manual review. Verification answers one question: do these details match the issuer record right now?

Running card checks on numbers you do not own or have permission to charge is illegal in the United States and most other countries. Legitimate use means operating as a merchant or payment provider with a merchant account, a compliant gateway, and the cardholder's consent for the transaction.

Compliance points for merchants

  • PCI DSS applies to any business that stores, processes, or transmits card data, and it prohibits retaining the CVV after authorization.
  • Card network rules govern how CVV and AVS results may be used and when a transaction can be declined.
  • Consumer protection rules require clear disclosures and a dispute process for cardholders.

How to choose a tool

  • Confirm the provider is PCI DSS compliant and states which level of compliance it holds.
  • Check which card networks and currencies are supported in your market.
  • Look for clear response codes so your team knows why an order was declined.
  • Prefer hosted fields or tokenization so raw card numbers never touch your servers.
  • Test the tool against real decline scenarios before you rely on it at scale.

Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide
