Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Credit Card Verification Test: Sandbox CVV Testing Guide

A credit card verification test checks whether your payment integration reads and acts on the CVV/CVC result the issuer returns. You run it in the gateway's sandbox with published test card numbers, then assert that your code accepts, flags, or rejects each response before a real card is charged. Use test data only. Real card numbers and their security codes have no place in a test suite.

credit card validation test

What the test verifies

  • Your checkout sends the CVV field to the gateway in the authorization request.
  • Your code reads the CVV result code in the response instead of ignoring it.
  • Your order logic blocks or holds transactions when the result is a mismatch.
  • Your storage layer never persists the CVV value after authorization.

Prerequisites

  • A sandbox or test-mode account with your payment processor.
  • Test API keys, kept separate from production credentials.
  • The processor's published test card list and its CVV result code table.
  • A staging build of your checkout that you can point at the sandbox host.

Steps

  1. Switch your gateway configuration to test mode and confirm the API base URL resolves to the sandbox host, not production.
  2. Pull the processor's test card numbers and select one card per brand you accept.
  3. Build a test case table that maps each published CVV test value to the outcome you expect: match, no match, or not processed.
  4. Run each row through your own checkout interface rather than a raw API client, so the full request path is exercised.
  5. Capture the raw authorization response and record the CVV result field, the AVS result field, and any decline code.
  6. Assert that your UI shows the intended message for each outcome and that a mismatch stops the order.
  7. Add negative cases: CVV left blank, wrong length, non-numeric characters, and a value sent for a card brand that does not use one.
  8. Inspect your database, application logs, and analytics events to confirm the CVV value appears nowhere after the request completes.

Result codes to assert

  • Match — the transaction should proceed on the CVV check. AVS may still fail, so test the two fields separately.
  • No match — the transaction should be declined or held for review, per your policy.
  • Not processed / unavailable — decide in advance whether you accept the charge or retry, and encode that decision.

Common mistakes

  • Testing only the happy path, so a mismatch code never exercises your decline branch.
  • Treating a CVV pass as proof the card is valid. It only confirms the code matched what the issuer has on file.
  • Logging the full request body, which writes the security code into plaintext logs.

Anyone offering to sell live CVV data is selling stolen payment credentials. There is no legitimate market for them, and holding or transmitting that data outside a PCI-compliant authorization flow breaks card network rules and, in most jurisdictions, the law.
