Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Credit Card Verification Test Guide for Merchants

Credit card verification test: the short answer

A credit card verification test checks whether a payment form correctly accepts or rejects the three or four digit security code printed on a card. If you are a merchant, developer, or QA engineer, the right way to do this is inside a processor sandbox using that processor's published test card numbers. There is no legitimate place to buy live CVVs or card numbers, and buying, selling, or testing card data that belongs to someone else is carding, which is a federal crime in the United States. So the practical advice is simple: choose a payment provider whose test environment lets you force a CVV mismatch on demand, then run your test matrix there and never touch real credentials.

What to look for in a testing setup

The tool you pick decides how much of your verification logic you can actually exercise. When you compare sandbox and pre-production environments, weight these features above everything else.

  • Sandbox parity with production. The test endpoint should apply the same address and security code rules as the live gateway, or your results mean nothing.
  • Forced response codes. You need a way to make the gateway return a specific CVV mismatch, an expired card, or an insufficient funds response without guessing.
  • Configurable CVV policy. Some providers let you set the code as required, optional, or bypassed for specific card brands and regions. That flexibility is what lets you test cardholder scenarios.
  • Tokenization on by default. Test environments that return a reusable token let you test repeat purchases without ever handling a raw value.
  • Log controls. You want request and response logging for debugging, plus the ability to confirm your own system is not writing the code to disk.
  • Webhook simulation. Decline and chargeback events should be triggerable so you can test the messaging your customer actually sees.

Coverage bands to size your test matrix

How much testing is enough depends on the size of your integration. These ranges work well as starting points.

more on this topic

  • Small integration, one gateway, one currency: 20 to 40 cases covering approvals, code mismatches, expirations, and network errors.
  • Mid-size integration, multiple card brands and regions: 60 to 150 cases, adding brand specific rules, partial approvals, and 3D Secure step-ups.
  • Enterprise or marketplace, multiple acquirers: 200 or more cases, including routing failures, retries, idempotency keys, and reconciliation of settled versus authorized amounts.

In every band, at least a quarter of your cases should be negative. Teams that only test the happy path ship forms that quietly accept bad codes.

Pitfalls that break verification logic

  1. Storing the security code. PCI DSS forbids retaining sensitive authentication data after authorization, even in encrypted form. If your test harness writes the code to a log, fix it before production.
  2. Treating a code mismatch as a hard decline. Many issuers return it as a soft response, and how you handle a retry changes your approval rate.
  3. Testing only with the processor's default card. Real traffic includes prepaid, commercial, and foreign issued cards with different rules.
  4. Skipping the mobile form. Autofill and numeric keypads introduce input errors that desktop testing never catches.
  5. Assuming sandbox success predicts live success. Issuer risk scoring, velocity checks, and payer authentication only exist in production.

Frequently asked questions

Can I test a CVV without a real card?

Yes. Every major processor publishes test card numbers with fixed security codes that always approve or always decline. Use those values only.

Is it legal to buy CVVs online?

No. Purchasing card credentials you do not own is fraud, and prosecutions are routine. Any site offering to sell them is either a scam or a criminal operation, and often both.

How do I test a mismatch if the sandbox always approves?

Use the processor's dedicated decline test values, or set your own gateway rule to reject any code outside a defined pattern in the test environment.

Does a passing sandbox test guarantee live approval?

No. It confirms your integration handles responses correctly. Live approval depends on the issuer, the cardholder, and your fraud controls.

Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide

I can't write a buying guide for CVVs or stolen card data. I can help with card-fraud prevention, PCI DSS, and payment-security content instead.
