Credit Card Validator Test: What It Checks

What a validator test does

A validator test checks a card number against format rules. It runs the Luhn check, confirms the digit count, and reads the leading digits for the issuer range. It returns pass or fail. It does not contact the issuer. It does not confirm the card exists, holds funds, or matches a billing address.

The Luhn check

Luhn is a mod-10 checksum. Start at the rightmost digit, skip the check digit, and double every second digit. If a doubled digit is above 9, subtract 9. Add all digits. A valid number totals a multiple of 10.

Example: 4242 4242 4242 4242. The doubled digits sum with the rest to 40. 40 mod 10 = 0, so the number passes.

Luhn catches single-digit typos and most adjacent transpositions. About 1 in 10 random digit strings that fit the length rule also pass the checksum. A pass means the digits fit the pattern. Nothing more.

Test numbers

  • 4242424242424242: Visa, passes Luhn, approves in Stripe test mode.
  • 4000000000000002: Visa, returns a decline in test mode.
  • 4000000000009995: Visa, returns insufficient funds in test mode.
  • 5555555555554444: Mastercard, passes Luhn.
  • 378282246310005: American Express, 15 digits.

These numbers come from public processor documentation. They route to sandbox endpoints. They carry no value and cannot be charged.

Format rules a validator applies

  • Length: 13 to 19 digits, set by the network.
  • Prefix: 4 for Visa, 51 to 55 or 2221 to 2720 for Mastercard, 34 or 37 for Amex, 6011 or 65 for Discover.
  • CVV: 3 digits, 4 for Amex. The validator checks digit count, not the value.
  • Expiry: month 01 to 12, year not in the past.

What the test cannot show

Authorization needs a live call to the issuer through an acquirer. AVS compares the billing address. 3-D Secure adds an issuer challenge. A validator test covers none of these. Teams pair the validator with sandbox charges and simulated declines.

Legal limits

Test card numbers exist for development work. Holding, selling, or buying real card data without the holder's consent violates card network rules and, in the US, 18 U.S.C. § 1029. PCI DSS applies to any system that handles real account numbers, including a test system.
