Test Expiry Card: How to Check Card Expiration Dates in Checkout Code
Use a test expiry card to check MM/YY validation in your checkout. Covers sandbox test cards, boundary cases, and the bugs that let expired cards through.
A credit card expiry test checks one field: the expiration date. The test confirms the month is 01 through 12 and the date is not in the past. It says nothing about the card. A number that fails no format rule can still belong to no account. The issuing bank answers that question through an authorization request.
A form test runs on the client or the server. It reads the string the user typed. A card number invented at random with a future date passes this test. The Luhn checksum catches single-digit typos and transposed digits. It does not prove an account is open. The 3-digit code on the back, called CVV2 or CVC2, gets the same treatment: three or four digits, format check, no verification.
Steps 3 and 4 hold the real answer. A decline code of "expired card" comes from the issuer, not from the form.
Expiry Date Test Card Guide: Where to Buy CVV
Payment processors publish test card numbers with fixed expiration dates for developer sandboxes. Stripe lists numbers such as 4242 4242 4242 4242 with any future date and any 3-digit code. These numbers pass with test API keys. With live keys they fail. Sandboxes exist for integration work on code, not for checks against live accounts.
PCI DSS treats the expiration date as cardholder data. Requirement 3 covers storage limits, and the sensitive authentication data rule blocks storage of the CVV after authorization. Merchants that keep the date in a database need it inside the scope of their PCI assessment.
If a date test fails in production, the cause is a format mismatch or a clock issue. Check the server time zone and the input mask before you change card logic.
