Test Expiry Card: How to Check Card Expiration Dates in Checkout Code
Use a test expiry card to check MM/YY validation in your checkout. Covers sandbox test cards, boundary cases, and the bugs that let expired cards through.
A credit card expiry test verifies one field: the four digit expiration date on the card. The format is MM/YY. Payment forms and gateways check that the month is 01 through 12 and that the full date falls in the future. A date in the past fails. Card networks reject an expired card at authorization.
The date is printed on the card and encoded on the magnetic stripe and the EMV chip. ISO/IEC 7813 defines the format for track data. At checkout the cardholder types the date into the form. The gateway passes it to the issuer inside the authorization message. The issuer compares it to its own record.
Processors publish test card numbers for integration work. Stripe, Adyen, and Authorize.net list test PANs and the expiration dates those numbers accept. Test cards run only in sandbox mode. They carry no funds and no real account. Test transactions belong on a sandbox key, not a live merchant account.
ISO 8583 response code 54 means expired card. Issuers return it when the authorization request carries a date the issuer has already passed. Other codes cover stolen card, insufficient funds, and do not honor.
Card Expiry Checker: A Guide to Verify Your Card's Validity
PCI DSS defines cardholder data as the primary account number plus the expiration date, cardholder name, and service code. PCI DSS 4.0 requires protection of stored cardholder data. The CVV is sensitive authentication data and cannot be stored after authorization.
A future expiration date does not prove a card is open, funded, or held by the person entering it. Expiry is one field among several. Authorization is the only step that confirms the issuer will approve a charge.
Testing cards issued to you, or cards a processor supplies in sandbox mode, is standard integration work. Testing cards you did not receive from an issuer or a processor is not.
