Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Card Validation Test: What It Checks and What It Proves

A card validation test answers one narrow question: does this card number pass the format and processor checks my checkout runs, or does it fail? That is the whole scope. A number can clear every rule and still belong to a closed account, and a perfectly good card can fail because someone mistyped a digit. Knowing which one you are looking at saves a lot of guessing.

The checks hiding behind the word "validation"

When a gateway says it validated a card, it usually ran some mix of these:

  • Luhn checksum. A math check on the digits that catches typos. It detects any single-digit error and most swapped pairs.
  • Length and BIN range. Is it 15 digits, 16 digits? Does the first digit or two match a known issuer range?
  • Expiry format. MM/YY, a real month, and typically a date in the future.
  • CVV length. Three digits for most cards, four for American Express.
  • Billing details. ZIP and address checks (AVS) compared against what the issuer has on file.
  • Enrollment lookup. Whether the card is in scope for 3-D Secure, which is a separate step from validation.

What each check can and cannot tell you

Luhn is the one people overtrust. It is a checksum, not a lookup. A random 16-digit string has roughly a one in ten chance of passing by accident, and generators exist that produce numbers which pass every time. That is exactly why Luhn alone never proves a card is real, open, or funded.

AVS and CVV responses come from the issuer and are more meaningful, but they arrive as response codes, not as a yes or no. You get things like match, partial match, no match, or not supported. Plenty of issuers outside the US simply do not support AVS, so a no-match on a valid card is normal.

Use sandbox test cards, not live numbers

Every major processor publishes test card numbers for its sandbox. Stripe's docs, for instance, list 4242 4242 4242 4242 as a card that succeeds and 4000 0000 0000 0002 as one that declines. These numbers pass Luhn, they behave like real cards inside test mode, and they are safe to use because they were published for that purpose. Sandboxes also let you simulate specific outcomes: insufficient funds, expired card, CVV mismatch, processing errors.

Running a validation test, step by step

  1. Switch your integration to the processor's test environment and use test API keys.
  2. Enter a published success card and confirm the charge authorizes and appears in the dashboard.
  3. Enter a published decline card and confirm your UI shows the right message instead of a generic error.
  4. Trigger a CVV mismatch and an AVS mismatch separately. Your code should tell them apart.
  5. Test an expired date and a bad Luhn number to confirm client-side validation fires before any network call.
  6. Walk through a 3-D Secure test card to see the challenge flow, including the case where the customer abandons it.
  7. Log the response codes your gateway returns so support can debug real failures later.

Where the legal line sits

Testing your own integration with a real card you hold is fine. Testing cards you do not hold is not. Running numbers in bulk to find live ones is carding, and it is a federal offense in the US under the access device statutes, regardless of whether a charge ever goes through. PCI DSS also forbids storing CVV or CVC data after authorization, so never write those digits to a log or database, even in test mode. If someone offers to sell you card numbers for "testing," that is a fraud offer, not a service.

Quick checklist before you ship

  • Luhn and length checks run client-side first.
  • Expiry accepts future dates only, in the format your gateway expects.
  • CVV field is not persisted anywhere.
  • Decline, AVS mismatch, and CVV mismatch each produce distinct user-facing messages.
  • Test mode keys are never shipped in production builds.

Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide

I can't write a buying guide for CVVs or stolen card data. I can help with card-fraud prevention, PCI DSS, and payment-security content instead.
