Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Card Testing Mitigation v8: How Merchants Stop Card Attacks

Card testing mitigation is the practice of blocking automated attempts to validate stolen payment card numbers through your checkout. Attackers only need a fast yes or no answer from your gateway, so every control you add either slows them down, hides that answer, or removes the profit from the attempt. This card testing mitigation v8 guide covers the signals, the controls, and the response steps that matter most for online merchants.

What a card testing attack looks like

Card testing, also called carding or card enumeration, shows up as a burst of payment attempts that do not resemble normal shopping behavior. Typical patterns include:

  • Very small basket values, often digital goods, gift cards, or donations, chosen so a successful charge draws little attention.
  • Guest checkout with no account creation, sometimes using disposable email addresses.
  • Billing details that fail to match the issuing bank record, repeated across many attempts.
  • Traffic from datacenter IP ranges, VPN exit nodes, or a wide spread of addresses that are each used once.
  • Long sequences of near identical requests in a short window, frequently aimed at the payment API rather than the storefront.

Signals that separate testing from real shoppers

No single signal proves an attack, but clusters of them do. Watch for a rising authorization rate paired with a falling capture rate, a spike in declines with response codes that indicate invalid card numbers, and a high ratio of attempts to completed orders. Device fingerprints that never return, email domains created in the last day, and shipping addresses that change between attempts on the same card are all worth scoring.

Card testing mitigation controls to put in place

  1. Rate limit by IP address, device fingerprint, email domain, and card BIN so no single identifier can drive unlimited attempts.
  2. Challenge suspicious sessions with a CAPTCHA or interstitial. Trigger it from a risk score rather than showing it to every visitor.
  3. Require CVV and address verification on high risk orders, and route failures to manual review instead of silent approval.
  4. Apply 3D Secure to card not present traffic from new devices, since an authentication challenge removes the cheap yes or no answer attackers rely on.
  5. Block disposable email providers, VoIP numbers, and known proxy and hosting ranges at the point of checkout.
  6. Set a minimum order value for guest checkout, which makes low value probing unprofitable.
  7. Cap order velocity per card, per email, and per shipping address over rolling windows.
  8. Alert on authorization rate changes grouped by BIN, country, and card brand.

Gateway and technical configuration

Most processors expose rules you can configure without code changes: velocity rules, blocklists, custom risk scores, and review queues. Where you have engineering support, log the full request context for every declined authorization, including device ID, IP, user agent, and the invoice amount. Feed those logs into a single dashboard so a support agent can see that forty attempts came from one device in ten minutes before the chargebacks arrive.

Responding while an attack is active

  • Raise the friction level on the affected checkout path first, then investigate.
  • Block the offending IP ranges, device IDs, and email domains at the edge.
  • Switch guest checkout to require a verified email or account for the duration of the wave.
  • Notify your acquirer and processor so they can flag the merchant account and watch for related activity.
  • Refund or void any test charges that did slip through, and document each one.

Measuring whether mitigation works

Track the number of authorization attempts per completed order, the share of orders that pass verification, the decline code mix, and the chargeback rate by month. A falling attempt to order ratio with a stable conversion rate means your card testing mitigation is working without punishing legitimate customers. Review these metrics weekly, since attackers rotate infrastructure and retest defenses that were tightened months ago.

Coordinating with processors and networks

Acquirers, card networks, and fraud vendors publish guidance on identifying enumeration and carding activity, and your processor can often share intelligence about attacks seen across its merchant base. Keep the contact details for your fraud team and acquirer risk desk current, and review your controls against their published recommendations at least twice a year.
