Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Card Testing Mitigation v4: Buyer's Guide for Merchants

Buy card testing mitigation on evidence from your own traffic, not on a vendor demo. The current generation of tools competes on three numbers: how many carding attempts it stops, how many legitimate customers it declines by mistake, and how much latency it adds to the authorization path. Ask for a trial on live traffic for at least 30 days, and make the contract conditional on hitting a false-positive ceiling you set in advance. A tool that blocks almost every attack but adds 400 milliseconds to checkout will cost you more in abandoned carts than the fraud it prevents.

card testing mitigation v8

Why card testing is a spending decision, not a checkbox

Card testing works by pushing a large volume of low-value authorization attempts through a checkout until the attacker finds card numbers that still work. The attackers do not care about your inventory. They care about how fast your endpoint answers and whether it tells them anything useful. That means the cost to you shows up in three places at once: processor fees on declined attempts, chargebacks on the ones that succeed, and the risk of losing your merchant account if the pattern repeats. Mitigation software is cheaper than any of those outcomes, which is why the purchase decision usually belongs to a risk or payments lead rather than an infrastructure team.

Card Testing Mitigation: A Practical Guide for Merchants

What to look for in a mitigation product

Feature lists all look similar. Score them on whether you can inspect and tune each layer.

Card Testing Mitigation V8: A Comprehensive Guide

  • Velocity controls with real dimensions. Look for rate limits by card fingerprint, email, IP subnet, device ID, and shipping address, not just by IP address. Attackers rotate IPs cheaply and rarely rotate devices at the same rate.
  • Authorization response analysis. The strongest signal is often the issuer response code. A burst of do-not-honor replies across many cards from one session is a carding signature.
  • Explainable scoring. Every decline should carry a reason code you can read. If the vendor cannot tell you why a transaction was blocked, you cannot tune it and you cannot defend it to a customer.
  • Challenge and attestation options. A lightweight browser challenge or device attestation stops scripted traffic before it reaches your payment form. Confirm it degrades gracefully for users on older browsers and accessibility tools.
  • Native dispute and refund workflow. Chargeback evidence collection is where mitigation pays for itself. Check whether the tool exports the data your acquirer requires.

Parameter bands worth negotiating

These are the ranges that separate a serious vendor from a reseller. Treat them as starting points, not absolutes.

card testing mitigation v2

  1. Added latency: under 100 milliseconds for a synchronous decision. Anything above 200 milliseconds should run asynchronously or not at all.
  2. Trial length: 30 days minimum, covering at least two full billing cycles so you see real dispute data.
  3. False-positive ceiling: set a written target, commonly under 1 percent of legitimate orders declined, and measure it on your own mix.
  4. Uptime commitment: 99.9 percent with defined fail-open behavior. A mitigation tool that takes your checkout down during an outage is worse than the attack.
  5. Data retention: at least 90 days of decision logs you can query and export, so you can reconstruct an incident after the fact.

Pricing and contract pitfalls

  • Per-transaction pricing that counts blocked attempts can bill you for the attack itself. Push for a cap or a flat platform fee.
  • Annual commitments signed before the trial ends remove your only leverage.
  • Vanity dashboards that report blocked attempts without reporting confirmed fraud prevention are marketing, not measurement.
  • No raw decision data means no independent audit. Ask for an export sample before you sign.
  • Fail-closed defaults are common and dangerous. Confirm in writing what happens when the vendor's API stops responding.
  • Scope creep on PCI obligations. Extra cardholder data leaving your environment changes your compliance surface, so get the data flow in writing.

FAQ

How quickly can a carding attack drain a store?

A scripted attack can generate thousands of authorization attempts in an hour. Your processor fees accumulate from the first minute, and a high decline ratio can trigger scrutiny from your acquirer within days.

Do I need a dedicated fraud tool or is a web application firewall enough?

A WAF filters traffic patterns. Card testing also arrives through clean residential proxies, so you need payment-level signals such as velocity by card and issuer response codes. Most merchants run both.

Will mitigation hurt conversion?

Only if it is tuned badly. Aggressive rules applied to your highest-value customers are the usual cause of lost revenue. Start in monitor mode, review the false positives, then enforce.

Where does 3D Secure fit?

It shifts liability on eligible transactions and slows carding, but it also adds friction. Use it selectively on high-risk signals rather than as a blanket rule.

How do I measure success after 90 days?

Track four figures: authorization attempts per unique card, decline rate, confirmed fraud rate, and false-positive rate. If the first three fall and the fourth stays flat, the tool is working.
