Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Card Testing Mitigation v3: Buyer's Guide for Merchants

Buy mitigation capability by control layer, not by vendor badge. The third generation of card testing defense rests on three things working together: authorization-level velocity rules, issuer-side verification of card verification value and address data, and a monitoring loop that turns declines and disputes into rule changes within hours instead of weeks. If you are evaluating a tool or a managed service, ask what it does at each of those layers before you compare anything else, because a strong CAPTCHA with nothing behind it will not stop a scripted test run.

What Card Testing Looks Like in Real Traffic

An attacker works from a list of card numbers and runs small authorizations, often a dollar or less, to learn which numbers are live. The traffic spreads across many IP addresses, user agents, and sometimes many merchant accounts. The signature is not one large transaction. It is a spike in low-value authorization attempts, a rise in decline rates, and a surge of sessions that reach the payment step and then vanish.

Attackers adapt. Once a static rule blocks a card range, the list shifts. This is why the current version of mitigation leans on behavioral and velocity signals rather than blocklists alone.

What to Look For in a Mitigation Stack

Coverage of the authorization path

The tool has to see requests before the authorization is sent, and it has to read the authorization response. A solution that only inspects the browser session misses attacks launched from headless clients that never load your checkout scripts. Ask the vendor where their sensor sits and confirm it fails closed when it cannot reach your systems.

Card Testing Mitigation v7: A Practical Guide

Rule ownership and change control

You need to write, test, and roll back your own rules without filing a support ticket. Look for a dry-run mode, version history, and role-based approval. Managed rules are useful as a starting point but should never be the only option you have.

Decision latency and false positives

Every extra millisecond at the payment step costs conversions. Request a latency budget in writing. Then ask how the vendor measures false positives, since a rule that blocks real customers is a revenue problem disguised as a security win.

Evidence and audit trail

You will need to explain decisions to your acquirer and, in some cases, to a forensic investigator. Confirm the tool logs the signals used, the rule that fired, and the outcome, and that the logs are retained long enough to cover a chargeback window.

Parameter Bands to Use as Starting Points

  • Decline rate on a single card range: investigate above 10 to 15 percent in a one-hour window.
  • Attempts per device fingerprint: flag above 5 authorizations in 10 minutes.
  • Attempts per IP address: flag above 10 authorizations in 10 minutes, with separate thresholds for shared networks.
  • Average authorization value during a burst: treat a drop below your typical basket size as a signal, not a coincidence.
  • Block rate ceiling: keep automatic blocks under 2 percent of total authorization attempts so legitimate traffic still clears.

These are starting points, not universal constants. Tune against your own baseline for two weeks before you tighten anything.

Pitfalls That Waste Budget

  • Buying a bot-detection product and assuming it covers authorization abuse. Different problem, different data.
  • Blocking entire countries or data centers. Attackers route around geography faster than you can update the list.
  • Ignoring the acquirer conversation. Your processor sees patterns across merchants that you cannot see alone, and some mitigation is free through that channel.
  • Setting rules once and never revisiting them. Card testing campaigns rotate infrastructure on a weekly cycle.
  • Treating CVV and address verification as a standalone fix. They raise the cost of an attack, but they do not replace velocity controls.

FAQ

Do I need a new vendor for version 3 capabilities?

Not always. Many current platforms already expose authorization-level rules and device signals. Check your existing contract before you add a second tool, since overlapping sensors create duplicate latency and split evidence.

How fast should a rule take effect?

Within minutes for blocking decisions. Anything slower lets a test run complete before your rule ships.

What is the single best first step?

Instrument your payment step so you can see low-value authorization bursts by card range, device, and IP. Without that baseline, no rule set will hold.
