Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Card Testing Mitigation v3: Stop Card Testing Attacks

What is card testing mitigation?

Card testing mitigation is the practice of detecting and blocking attempts to validate stolen card numbers through your payment page. Attackers run thousands of low-value authorization attempts and read the approval or decline response to learn which numbers are live. Effective mitigation combines traffic controls, payment verification, and monitoring so an automated script cannot use your checkout as a validation tool.

Card Testing Mitigation v10: A Comprehensive Guide

How does card testing work?

Attackers start with bulk card data and need to separate working numbers from dead ones. They script a checkout form and submit small transactions, often under a dollar, because low amounts are more likely to approve without triggering a manual review. The response message becomes the signal they need.

Some scripts hit a merchant's own gateway. Others abuse donation pages, guest checkouts, or subscription trials with a near-zero first charge. High-volume attempts usually arrive in short bursts from distributed IP addresses.

What are the warning signs of card testing?

  • A sudden spike in failed authorizations with similar amounts.
  • Many card numbers tried against a small set of IP addresses or devices.
  • Order volume far above normal with a tiny average order value.
  • Disputes arriving weeks later from cardholders who never shopped with you.
  • Repeated attempts from the same email domains or on sequential card numbers.

What mitigation controls work best?

The strongest defenses stack traffic limits, bot challenges, and payment verification on the same endpoint. No single control stops every script, but each layer raises the attacker's cost per attempt.

Card Testing Mitigation v7: A Practical Guide

Rate limiting and velocity checks

Cap authorization attempts per IP, device, session, and card number inside a rolling window. Velocity rules should count declines as well as approvals, because the declines are the attacker's real product. Blocking a card after several failed attempts on one checkout slows enumeration without affecting normal shoppers.

Bot detection and challenges

Automated scripts tend to reuse the same user agent, timing pattern, and form-fill cadence. A CAPTCHA or proof-of-work challenge on suspicious sessions forces a cost per attempt that bulk testing cannot absorb. Invisible challenges keep conversion intact for real customers while stopping scripted traffic.

Payment verification requirements

Require the card verification value and enable address verification service checks on every transaction. Reject mismatches instead of routing them to manual review, which does not stop a script. Never store the verification value after authorization.

Adding 3-D Secure or another authentication step raises the cost of each test and can shift fraud liability for chargebacks in many cases.

Gateway and provider controls

Use the fraud tools your processor already offers, including block lists, velocity rules, and risk scoring. Ask your provider to enable network-level controls that flag enumeration patterns. Setting these up before an attack is far faster than changing providers mid-incident.

How do you respond during an active attack?

  1. Tighten rate limits on the affected checkout endpoint.
  2. Block the source ranges, device fingerprints, and card BINs driving the spike.
  3. Disable guest checkout temporarily if the script depends on it.
  4. Notify your processor so it can filter traffic upstream.
  5. Review the affected window and void fraudulent orders.

Does card testing cause chargebacks?

Yes. Every approved test charge can become a chargeback when the real cardholder notices it, and those disputes carry fees and count against your ratio. Declined attempts also cost money through authorization fees on many pricing plans. That is why mitigation targets the traffic pattern, not just individual card numbers.

How do you prevent card testing long term?

Log every authorization attempt with device, IP, and timing data so patterns stay visible after the incident. Review thresholds monthly and adjust them as normal traffic changes. Keep the verification requirement, authentication step, and velocity rules in place permanently instead of switching them on only during attacks.
