Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Card Testing Mitigation: Stop BIN Attacks at Checkout

Card testing mitigation: the short answer

Card testing mitigation means making it expensive for an attacker to learn which stolen card numbers still work. You cut the feedback loop with rate limits, stricter authorization checks, bot defense at checkout, and alerts that fire when decline rates jump. No single setting stops the attack. A stack of controls does.

What card testing looks like on your gateway

Card testing, also called card enumeration or a BIN attack, is a burst of authorization attempts using stolen card data. The attacker needs one thing from you: a yes or no answer. Small dollar amounts, odd cardholder names, mismatched billing data, and a wall of declines in your logs are the usual footprint. Some operations route through residential proxies, some through compromised storefronts, and some through your own donation or subscription page.

card testing mitigation v2

Prerequisites

  • Access to your payment gateway rule engine and webhook logs.
  • Permission to change checkout code or your platform fraud settings.
  • Someone on call who can pause a payment endpoint during an active burst.
  • A short list of legitimate high-volume customers so you do not lock them out.

Mitigation steps

  1. Set velocity limits on authorization attempts per card number, per IP address, per device fingerprint, and per email address.
  2. Require CVV and AVS verification on every authorization, and decline on mismatch instead of allowing a silent retry.
  3. Place a bot defense challenge on checkout, account creation, and password reset forms.
  4. Block traffic from datacenter IP ranges and known open proxies at the edge.
  5. Set a minimum order amount and reject authorization-only requests that never convert to a charge.
  6. Route transactions that trip any risk rule into 3-D Secure step-up authentication.
  7. Alert when declines pass a set share of attempts inside a ten minute window.
  8. Throttle or disable the affected endpoint while you investigate.
  9. Void and refund the test charges, then report the event to your acquirer.
  10. Rotate API keys and audit webhook endpoints for unauthorized additions once the burst ends.

Signals worth alerting on

  • Many different card numbers arriving from one IP or device.
  • Sequential card numbers or cards sharing a single BIN inside a short window.
  • Decline rates above 40 percent on a checkout page.
  • Cardholder names that do not match the billing country.
  • Traffic spikes during hours when your real customers sleep.

After a test run hits

Card testing raises your decline rate and can trip processor monitoring thresholds, which puts your merchant account at risk. Document the timeline, the rule changes you made, and the volume you blocked. Hand that record to your acquirer if they ask for it. Then tune the limits. Set them too tight and you lose real orders. Set them too loose and the next run gets through.
