Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Card Testing Mitigation: How to Stop Card Testing Attacks

Card testing mitigation, in one paragraph

Card testing mitigation is the set of controls that stop criminals from using your checkout to check whether stolen card numbers are live. The goal is not just to block individual transactions. It is to make your site a poor testing ground, so the attacker moves on and your authorization rates, processing fees, and processor relationship stay intact. Most merchants get the best results by combining velocity limits, rules-based blocking, and a challenge step that costs the attacker time without punishing real buyers.

Why attackers pick a given site

Card testers look for cheap, fast, low-friction checkout flows. Small basket amounts, guest checkout, instant digital delivery, and any endpoint that returns a clear approved or declined response all make the job easier. So does a merchant who never blocks anything, because a test that returns a genuine "insufficient funds" or "do not honor" response still tells the attacker the card number is valid.

Card Testing Mitigation: A Practical Guide for Merchants

That last point is the part merchants miss. The decline message matters as much as the approval. If your gateway passes raw issuer responses straight back to the browser, you are handing over a working validation oracle.

Card Testing Mitigation V8: A Comprehensive Guide

Detection signals worth watching

  • A spike in authorization attempts with a high decline rate inside a short window.
  • Many different card numbers coming from the same device, IP, or session.
  • Repeated small-dollar orders, often a dollar or less, or a stream of near-identical baskets.
  • Cards from BIN ranges that do not match your customer base or your shipping country.
  • New accounts that place an order within seconds of being created.
  • Email addresses with sequential or random-looking patterns, or catch-all domains.
  • Checkout sessions that touch the payment step many times without ever leaving the cart.

No single signal proves an attack. Two or three firing together usually does.

Controls that reduce it

  1. Velocity limits. Cap attempts per IP, device fingerprint, card BIN, email, and account within rolling windows. Start tight and loosen once you see what legitimate traffic looks like.
  2. Rules-based blocking. Most gateways and fraud tools let you write custom rules on BIN country, amount, and attempt count. Block or send to review instead of auto-approving.
  3. Require CVV and AVS. Skipping either one removes the cheapest validation barrier you have.
  4. Step-up authentication. 3D Secure shifts liability for eligible transactions and adds friction that test scripts handle poorly.
  5. Bot defenses at checkout. CAPTCHA, proof-of-work, or a managed bot product on the payment endpoint, not just the login page.
  6. Rate limiting on the API layer. Protect the authorization call itself, not only the storefront form.
  7. Generic error messaging. Return one neutral failure message to the buyer and log the real issuer response server-side.
  8. Block disposable email and known bad IP ranges. Cheap filters that catch a lot of scripted traffic.

After an attack lands

Pull the authorization logs for the window and look for the pattern: shared device IDs, shared IPs, BIN clusters, and the time between attempts. Refund or void anything that has not shipped. Contact your acquirer if the volume was large, because they may see it before you do and a heads-up helps. Then check your dispute and fraud ratios. The card networks run monitoring programs with thresholds above which merchants face fees or remediation plans, and a burst of test transactions that later turn into chargebacks can push you toward one.

Measuring whether it works

Track three numbers: authorization attempt volume per hour, the share of attempts that come from new or unverified accounts, and your false decline rate. Mitigation is working when attempts drop and legitimate approvals do not. If approvals fall while attempts stay flat, you have tightened in the wrong place and are turning away real customers. Review the rules monthly. Testers rotate infrastructure fast, so a rule that worked in January may be dead weight by spring.
