Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Card Testing Mitigation: 8 Steps to Block Card Testing

What card testing mitigation means

Card testing mitigation is the set of controls you put on your checkout, donation page, or signup form to detect and stop automated attempts to validate stolen card numbers. Attackers submit hundreds or thousands of low-value authorizations, watch which ones approve, and then resell or use the live numbers. The money lost to the test charges is small. The real damage is chargebacks, processor fines, and a merchant account that gets flagged or terminated.

Card Testing Mitigation v10: A Comprehensive Guide

The fix is layered: make each authorization harder to fake, make bulk attempts expensive, and make the pattern visible fast. Below is the order that works when you have to deploy under pressure.

card testing mitigation v6

Prerequisites

  • Admin access to your payment gateway or processor dashboard
  • Ability to edit the checkout or donation form template
  • Authorization logs with IP, device, BIN, amount, and response code fields
  • A named person who can act on alerts within one hour

Steps to deploy

  1. Turn on CVV and AVS verification for every transaction and set the gateway to decline on a full mismatch. This removes the cheapest form of testing because the attacker has the number but rarely the billing address or security code.
  2. Require 3-D Secure on all new cards and on any transaction under your average order value. Authentication shifts liability and breaks most scripted attempts at the issuer step.
  3. Set velocity limits per IP address, per device fingerprint, and per card BIN. A common starting rule is three attempts per IP per hour and ten per BIN per day, tightened after you see your baseline.
  4. Add a challenge to the payment form. A CAPTCHA or a lightweight proof-of-work check on submit stops headless scripts without adding friction for real buyers.
  5. Block traffic from data center and hosting IP ranges, and throttle countries where you have no customers. Most test traffic comes from cloud hosts, not residential connections.
  6. Create auto-block rules on decline patterns. Block the card, the IP, and the email domain after a defined count of declines inside a short window.
  7. Set alerts on authorization volume, decline rate, and the count of transactions under one dollar. A sudden rise in one-dollar approvals is the clearest early signal of an active attack.
  8. Review the blocked list and the velocity thresholds every week, and loosen anything that is catching legitimate repeat customers.

Signals worth watching

Watch the ratio of authorization attempts to completed checkouts, the share of traffic with mismatched AVS, and any cluster of attempts that share a BIN but not a customer name. Also watch for sequential card numbers in the same minute, which points to a generator rather than a human buyer.

What not to do

Do not respond by disabling CVV checks to raise approval rates, and do not settle for a single control such as a CAPTCHA. Test traffic adapts within days. Rate limits, authentication, and monitoring have to run together, and the thresholds have to be reviewed on a schedule rather than set once.
