No Legit Market for CVV Data: Why Selling CVVs Is Illegal
There is no legitimate place to sell CVV data. Trafficking in card verification values is card fraud under U.S. law; use lawful payment and fraud-reporting channels instead.
Card testing log analysis is the practice of reviewing payment gateway, web server, and application logs to separate automated card-testing attacks from normal customer traffic. The telltale signature is high-volume, low-value authorization attempts that produce an abnormal share of declines, often from a small set of IP addresses, devices, or email patterns. Done well, it turns raw log lines into a blocking decision within minutes rather than after the chargebacks arrive.
A card-testing run usually shows a burst of authorization requests concentrated in a short window, with amounts that are identical or trivially small. Decline codes cluster around do-not-honor and invalid-account responses, because most tested numbers fail. Successful approvals in the same burst tend to be followed quickly by a larger purchase or by resale of the validated number.
The highest-value fields are timestamp, source IP, card fingerprint or token, BIN, amount, response code, and merchant order ID. Session identifiers, user agent, and device fingerprint let you link attempts that rotate cards but keep the same client. Retaining these fields in a searchable store matters more than the raw log format you choose.
Legitimate shoppers show varied amounts, slower pacing, and a mix of successful and failed payments over time. Card testing shows the opposite: uniform amounts, machine-like intervals, and a decline rate far above your baseline. Comparing a candidate burst against your own historical distribution is more reliable than any fixed threshold.
Contain first: rate-limit or block the offending networks, require step-up authentication on suspect sessions, and pause checkout paths that accept scripted input. Then notify your payment processor or acquirer with the evidence window, since they can block at the network level and may share intelligence. Finally, preserve the relevant log slices for dispute and chargeback defense.
Logs only cover what you chose to record and retain, and payment data in logs widens your compliance scope. Store card fingerprints and tokens instead of full numbers, restrict access, and set a retention window that matches your dispute timeline. Attackers who rotate residential proxies and unique cards can stay under per-IP thresholds, so pair log analysis with behavioral and device signals.
