Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Card Test Payment Gateway: Sandbox Test Cards Guide

A card test payment gateway is a sandbox copy of a payment processor where you charge published test card numbers instead of live cards. Stripe test mode is the top pick for most US teams: it publishes a broad test card library, triggers for common decline codes, 3D Secure simulations, and event replay without a merchant account. I compared gateways on four criteria: the size and documentation of the test card set, the range of simulated declines and authentication outcomes, how closely sandbox payloads match production, and how fast you can reset test state between runs.

Test cards are not live accounts. Numbers such as 4242 4242 4242 4242 and 4000 0000 0000 0002 are published by processors and return responses inside that processor sandbox alone. CVC and expiry fields accept placeholder values when the test number itself is valid. Nothing in this guide works against a production gateway, and test data should never be mixed with real cardholder data.

Stripe test mode

Pros

  • Documented test PANs map to specific decline codes such as insufficient funds, lost card, and stolen card.
  • 3DS test cards cover challenge and frictionless flows.
  • Test clocks simulate subscription renewal, dunning, and trial endings.
  • Event triggers and webhook forwarding let you replay the same event twice.

Cons

  • Radar rules and issuer-level behavior can differ from live traffic.
  • The card library is large, so sorting it by scenario takes time.

Pick Stripe when your checkout handles subscriptions, webhooks, or SCA and you need decline coverage on day one.

Adyen test environment

Pros

  • Test cards exist for each payment method and region, including local methods.
  • 3DS2 test credentials reproduce challenge and frictionless outcomes.
  • You can force a result code on a per-request basis.

Cons

  • A test merchant account with client key is required before the first call.
  • Guidance sits across many payment method pages, which slows onboarding.

Best for multi-region shops that must verify local payment methods and 3DS2 before launch.

Braintree sandbox

Pros

  • Test amounts force specific outcomes, so you can hit a decline without hunting for a number.
  • Drop-in UI, PayPal, and Venmo flows all run in the sandbox.
  • Separate sandbox keys keep test traffic out of production.

Cons

  • PayPal and Venmo sandbox behavior can differ from live.
  • Fewer published decline variants than Stripe.

Suited to checkouts built around PayPal or Venmo as the primary button.

Checkout.com sandbox

Pros

  • Test cards cover 3DS and non-3DS scheme flows.
  • Dispute and webhook simulation helps with post-purchase logic.
  • Tokens and stored card flows are testable.

Cons

  • Account approval gates parts of the sandbox.
  • Named decline triggers are fewer than on Stripe.

Use it if you are already on Checkout.com rails or you need dispute and payout testing.

Authorize.net sandbox

Pros

  • Separate sandbox login keeps production keys untouched.
  • Recurring billing and customer profile testing are supported.
  • Long-standing documentation aimed at US merchants.

Cons

  • Legacy API surface compared with newer processors.
  • Sandbox feature releases can lag production.

Fits US merchants with stored profiles and recurring charges already on Authorize.net.

Criteria that separate a usable sandbox from a demo

  1. Can you force a specific decline code on demand?
  2. Does the sandbox return the same field names and error objects as production?
  3. Can you simulate 3DS challenge, frictionless, and rejection?
  4. Can you replay or resend a webhook event?
  5. Do you get test credentials for every payment method you plan to ship?
  6. Can you reset account state without opening a support ticket?

Test scenarios to run before you go live

  1. Authorization and capture with a generic test card.
  2. Decline for insufficient funds, then your retry path in the UI.
  3. 3DS challenge that the shopper abandons.
  4. Duplicate webhook delivery and idempotency handling.
  5. Full refund and partial refund against a test charge.
  6. Expired card and invalid CVC rejection.

Run those six cases against at least two gateways before you commit to one. The sandbox that mirrors production payloads and lets you force declines will save the most integration time.

Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide

I can't write a buying guide for CVVs or stolen card data. I can help with card-fraud prevention, PCI DSS, and payment-security content instead.
