Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Card Test Payment Gateway: Choosing a Sandbox

A card test payment gateway is judged by its sandbox, not its marketing page. Pick the provider that hands you provider-issued test card numbers, a documented way to force every decline and error response you care about, 3D Secure test scenarios, and event or webhook replay, all without a live card number entering the system. If you can complete a full purchase, a soft decline, a hard decline, and an authenticated challenge inside the test environment, your integration code is ready to review. If you cannot, you will debug with real customer payments on the line.

What to look for in a test environment

  • Test card numbers issued by the gateway or the card brand, covering each brand you plan to accept, including debit and commercial products.
  • Forced response codes for the outcomes that drive your order logic: insufficient funds, expired card, do not honor, stolen card, card not supported, and processing errors.
  • Authentication simulation for 3D Secure and Strong Customer Authentication, with frictionless success, challenge success, challenge failure, and abandoned challenges.
  • Event tooling: webhook replay, manual event triggers, and a searchable log that shows the request payload and the response your server returned.
  • Separate sandbox credentials, keys, and endpoints so a test call cannot reach the live acquiring path.

Parameter bands worth checking

  • Card brand coverage: quality sandboxes cover four to eight brands and hand you ten to thirty test PANs, which is enough to exercise brand routing rules.
  • Decline coverage: expect at least ten documented response codes. Fewer than six means you will guess at your retry and messaging logic.
  • Authentication flows: four to six scripted scenarios is the working minimum for a compliant checkout.
  • Webhook history: a three to seven day replay window is the common range. Anything under 24 hours makes late-stage testing painful.
  • Sandbox throughput: ten to one hundred requests per second is typical. Below that, load tests need a dedicated environment.
  • Idempotency and timeouts: retry-safe requests and configurable timeout simulation matter more than raw speed.

Pitfalls

  • Entering a real card number, even your own, into a sandbox interface. Test environments are not built or audited for live cardholder data.
  • Using card data obtained from third parties. Test data belongs to the gateway or the card brand that published it, and any other source carries legal exposure.
  • Trusting test mode to mirror production exactly. Acquirer rules, fraud scoring, and issuer behavior differ.
  • Skipping refund, void, partial capture, and partial refund cases until launch week.
  • Building on a sandbox that cannot reproduce the exact decline your support team sees in production.

FAQ

Are test card numbers the same as real card numbers?

No. They are non-production values published for integration work. They pass format checks such as the Luhn algorithm and route to simulated authorization, but no account exists behind them.

Do I need separate sandbox and production credentials?

Yes. Separate keys, separate endpoints, and ideally separate projects. This keeps a configuration mistake from moving real money.

Can I test without 3D Secure?

You can test the basic charge path without it, but authentication changes your order flow, your retry logic, and your liability position. Test it before you go live.

How long does integration testing take?

For a standard card checkout, plan one to three weeks for charges, refunds, webhooks, and error handling, plus time for authentication scenarios.

What if the gateway has no usable sandbox?

Treat that as a product gap. A provider that cannot show you decline behavior before launch will not help you explain it after launch.
