Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Card Test Mode: What It Is and What to Check

Card Test Mode in One Paragraph

Card test mode is a sandbox inside a payment platform. You send fake card numbers to a test endpoint and get simulated approvals, declines, and error codes back. No real money moves and no real cardholder is touched. That is the whole point: developers build checkout, refund, and subscription logic against a copy of the gateway before flipping to live keys. If what you actually want is a way to check whether a card number is live, that is card testing fraud, not card test mode. Buying or selling card data, including CVV values, is illegal in the United States and most other countries, and running live numbers through a gateway you do not own is a federal crime. The useful purchase decision is which payment platform gives you a solid test mode, and which fraud controls you layer on top to stop attackers from using your live checkout for the same abusive purpose.

What to Look For in a Platform's Test Mode

  • Documented test card numbers. The platform should publish a fixed list of numbers that map to specific outcomes. You want to know before you integrate that a given number always declines, always succeeds, or always triggers a challenge.
  • Response code coverage. A weak sandbox only simulates success. A good one covers insufficient funds, expired card, incorrect CVV, do-not-honor, and processing errors, because your error handling is the part most likely to break in production.
  • Webhook and event simulation. Test mode should fire the same events as production: authorization, capture, refund, dispute, and subscription renewal. If events only fire in live mode, your integration is untested where it matters.
  • Sandbox isolation. Test keys must not reach the live network. Confirm the platform separates key spaces and that a test key fails loudly if pointed at a live endpoint.
  • Reset controls. You want a way to clear test customers, test subscriptions, and test balances so a demo does not carry stale state into the next one.

Parameter Bands That Matter

These are the ranges worth comparing when you pick a platform. Exact limits vary, so confirm them in current vendor documentation rather than trusting a summary.

  • Test card library size: fewer than a dozen test numbers is thin. Mature platforms ship several dozen, covering declines, authentication challenges, expired cards, and cards from multiple networks.
  • Authentication simulation: you need a way to force a three-domain secure challenge outcome, pass or fail, without a real issuer in the loop.
  • Webhook reliability: look for automatic retries with backoff, on the order of several attempts over a day, plus a manual replay option for individual events.
  • Log retention in test mode: anything from a week to a month is normal. Shorter retention makes debugging an intermittent failure much harder.
  • Time to first test charge: a clean signup to first simulated authorization in under an hour is a reasonable expectation for a modern platform.

Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Treating test mode as a validation service. Test mode accepts only the numbers the platform publishes. It cannot tell you anything about a card you did not create in the sandbox.
  • Pasting purchased card data into anything. Purchased card numbers are stolen credentials. Possessing them for use is a crime, and platforms log every attempt against your account.
  • Shipping test keys. A test key in a production build either fails silently or, worse, points at a misconfigured live environment.
  • Ignoring attacks on your live gateway. Card testing fraud shows up on the merchant side as bursts of small authorization attempts from many cards on one checkout page. Watch velocity, block repeated declines by IP and device, require CAPTCHA on suspicious sessions, and enable authentication challenges. Your processor's fraud tooling and network monitoring exist for exactly this pattern, and using them is cheaper than absorbing the chargeback fees that follow.

FAQ

Is card test mode the same as a test card number?

No. Test mode is the environment. A test card number is one input you use inside it. You need both, plus a platform that documents which number produces which outcome.

Can test mode ever touch a real card?

It should not. A platform that routes test keys to the live network has a serious defect. Verify the separation before you integrate, and never enter a real card number into a sandbox form.

How do I stop card testing attacks on my store?

Rate limit your checkout, require authentication challenges above a risk threshold, block by device and IP on repeated declines, and alert on spikes of small authorizations. Report sustained attacks to your processor and to the card networks so they can act on the merchant data they already collect.

What if a vendor offers to sell me card numbers for testing?

Walk away. Legitimate test numbers are published by payment platforms at no cost. Anyone selling card data is selling stolen credentials, and buying them exposes you to criminal liability.

Why I Can't Write a CVV Buying Guide

I can't write a buying guide for CVVs or stolen card data. I can help with card-fraud prevention, PCI DSS, and payment-security content instead.
