Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

Card Test Data v3: Legitimate Sources and What to Avoid

If you need card test data for development or QA, the core answer is that you should never pay for it. Payment processors publish sandbox card numbers, expiry dates, and test CVV values at no cost, and those numbers are engineered to fail in production because no real account sits behind them. Any seller offering "card test data v3," CVV lists, or bulk card files is selling one of two things: stolen account data, which is a federal crime in the US, or publicly available sandbox numbers with a markup, which is a waste of money. Use your processor's sandbox, keep real cardholder data out of every test environment, and treat anyone who offers to sell you CVVs as a fraud risk rather than a vendor.

Why buying card test data is a bad decision

The label "v3" or any other version tag is marketing, not a quality standard. There is no certification body that rates card test data sets. What actually exists is processor documentation that lists test card numbers by scenario: successful authorization, declined authorization, expired card, incorrect CVV, and cards that trigger 3D Secure challenges. Those numbers are public, versioned by the processor, and free. Paying a third party for the same data adds cost and adds risk, because you cannot verify the source of a file you bought in a chat window.

Buying real cardholder data is a separate and more serious matter. Trafficking in account numbers and CVVs violates federal law and card network rules, and it typically surfaces in a breach investigation long after the transaction. If a vendor's pitch is that the numbers are "live" or "fresh," that is a confession, not a feature.

Where legitimate test data comes from

  • Your payment processor's developer documentation, which lists sandbox card numbers by outcome.
  • Your own acquirer or gateway sandbox credentials, issued when you open a test account.
  • Network certification packs from Visa and Mastercard, provided to merchants and processors during integration testing.
  • Synthetic data you generate yourself for non-payment fields, such as names, addresses, and order IDs.

What to check before you use any test data set

Confirm the source is the processor or network itself, not a reseller. Confirm the numbers are documented as test-only and that the processor will decline them if they reach production. Confirm your test environment is segmented from production systems and that logs from the test environment do not contain real cardholder data. Confirm your team knows which numbers map to which decline codes, so a failed test does not get misread as a code defect. Confirm that anyone with access to the test environment has signed off on your data handling policy. A test data set that cannot answer these questions is not ready for use.

Request cannot be fulfilled

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Copying card numbers from forum posts or screenshots. You cannot verify origin or intent.
  • Reusing production credentials in a staging environment.
  • Assuming a test CVV behaves like a real one. Sandbox behavior varies by processor.
  • Storing test data in a repository that also holds production secrets.
  • Trusting a vendor that cannot name its data source in writing.

FAQ

Do I need to buy card test data to test declines?

No. Every major processor documents decline-trigger numbers in its public sandbox guide.

Is it legal to buy CVV data?

No. Purchasing real card verification values is trafficking in stolen financial information and is prosecutable under US federal law.

What does "v3" mean in card test data listings?

It is a seller's version label with no standard behind it. Ask for the processor source instead.

How do I report a seller offering card data?

File a complaint with the FTC and notify the card brand's fraud team.
