Card Number Generator Test: Luhn Checks and Test Cards

Answer first

A card number generator for testing builds digit strings that pass the Luhn checksum. That is the whole function. The output is not a funded account and not a valid payment credential. A generated number fails at authorization against any live card network because no issuer holds that account.

What the Luhn check does

The Luhn formula is a mod 10 checksum. It catches typing errors. It does not prove an account exists.

  1. Start from the rightmost digit and move left.
  2. Double every second digit.
  3. If a doubled digit is above 9, subtract 9.
  4. Add all digits.
  5. The total must divide by 10.

A generator picks a prefix, often a real bank identification number range, fills the middle digits, then computes the final digit so the sum divides by 10. A 16 digit string with a correct check digit can still be rejected in under a second.

Test numbers from processors

Stripe, Adyen, and PayPal publish fixed test card numbers for sandbox accounts. Each number maps to a set outcome: approval, decline, insufficient funds, or a 3D Secure challenge. These numbers work only inside a test merchant account. They return a fixed response and move no money.

Why random generated numbers fail

  • The issuer does not recognize the account.
  • The expiration date and CVV do not match any record.
  • The acquiring bank runs address and velocity checks.
  • Live networks return a decline code such as 05 or 14.

Sandbox environments accept only numbers on the processor test list. A random string returns an error before any authorization step.

Where generated numbers are used

  • Unit tests for Luhn validation code.
  • Form checks on digit count, spacing, and input masks.
  • Layout tests for long input fields.
  • Log scrubbing tests, to confirm card data is masked.

Compliance limits

PCI DSS bars storage of a primary account number unless the data is protected. Test data must not look like production data. Teams that keep generated numbers in fixtures should mark them as test values and keep them out of shared logs.

What to use instead

Use the test card table from your payment processor. Use a checksum library for Luhn tests. Use network tokens for staging flows. A generator gives you a checksum, not a card.
