Test Expiry Card: How to Check Card Expiration Dates in Checkout Code
Use a test expiry card to check MM/YY validation in your checkout. Covers sandbox test cards, boundary cases, and the bugs that let expired cards through.
A card expiration test verifies one narrow thing: whether your payment flow reads, validates, and forwards an expiration date correctly. Run it in your processor's sandbox, use test card numbers your processor publishes, and include the month boundary where a card that expires this month is still good through the last day of that month. If you are trying to confirm whether a card you do not own is live, that is a different activity and this guide does not cover it. Everything below applies to cards your business owns or to sandbox credentials.
Four behaviors matter, and a useful test plan isolates each one.
Your processor's test environment should apply the same validation logic as live mode. If it does not, your passing tests mean nothing. Confirm this before you write a single test case, and re-confirm after any processor-side change.

Keep the matrix in version control next to the checkout code. When someone changes the form, the matrix tells them what to re-run. A matrix that lives in a spreadsheet on one person's laptop gets stale within a quarter.
You need to see the authorization request your server sends and the response it receives. Without that pair, you cannot tell whether a decline came from your own validation or from the issuer.
The browser should catch obvious typos for a better experience. The server should re-validate everything. A test that only exercises the browser tells you nothing about what happens when a scripted request skips the form.
Each row below is a distinct input class. Run all of them against every card brand you accept, because brands differ in how they treat edge cases.
For a card-not-present transaction, usually yes. Recurring and merchant-initiated charges are a partial exception, because account updater services can refresh a stored expiration date and keep a subscription alive without the customer doing anything.
It is cardholder data, which means it falls inside the scope of your data protection obligations when you store it. It is not sensitive authentication data, so storing it is permitted with the right controls. The security code is the opposite: do not store it.
Yes. Every major processor publishes test card numbers, and most supply specific numbers that simulate declines, expired cards, and processing errors. Use those.
Accept MM/YY and MM/YYYY on input, normalize internally, and send the format your processor documents. Two-digit years are conventional but ambiguous, so convert them before the request leaves your server.
