Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

BIN Test Guide: How to Buy BIN Lookup Data

Buy on accuracy and coverage, not on the lowest per-lookup rate. A BIN test service earns its cost only when it returns the right issuer, brand, card type, and country for the traffic you actually process. Before you sign a term contract, run a paid trial against a sample of your own historical transactions and compare the results field by field with what your processor reports.

What a BIN test does

A BIN test checks the leading digits of a card number against a reference table. ISO/IEC 7812 defines those digits as the issuer identification number, and card networks use them to route transactions. A lookup typically returns the card brand, funding type such as credit, debit, or prepaid, the issuing country, and whether the account is consumer or commercial. Some providers add issuer name, contact details, and a validity flag that tells you the number is structurally plausible before you send it to a payment network.

Two jobs come out of that: validation, which catches malformed or impossible numbers at the edge of your checkout, and enrichment, which feeds routing rules, retry logic, and fraud screening.

What to look for before you buy

  • Coverage of your own BIN mix. Ask the vendor to run your top ranges as a test set. General coverage claims mean little if the specific ranges you see are missing.
  • Eight-digit support. Networks have migrated ranges to eight digits, so a table built for six-digit lookups will misclassify part of your traffic.
  • Provenance and refresh cadence. Data sourced from network updates and refreshed on a schedule beats a static file resold for years.
  • Fields returned. Match the response schema to the decisions you want to make, and confirm whether you get a confidence or match indicator.
  • Latency and throughput. Real-time authorization paths need predictable response times; batch work needs volume.
  • Sandbox access. You want a test mode with representative data so you can build before you go live.
  • Pricing shape. Per-lookup, tiered, and subscription models all exist. The question is which one matches your volume curve and what happens when you exceed it.
  • Data handling terms. Confirm what the provider logs, how long it keeps it, and whether it stores full account numbers.

Parameter bands for your evaluation sheet

  • Response time: p99 under 200 ms for inline checkout checks; batch jobs are measured in records per minute.
  • Uptime: a written SLA at 99.9 percent or better with a defined credit remedy.
  • Refresh: daily or weekly updates for live tables; quarterly is acceptable only for low-risk reporting.
  • Match rate: 90 percent or higher against your own sample, measured before contract.
  • Support: eight-digit ranges, multiple card brands, and prepaid or commercial flags.

Pitfalls that cost money

  1. Treating BIN data as an approval decision. It describes a card range, not a person or an account balance.
  2. Ignoring overage terms. A cheap headline rate with steep overage charges can cost more than a flat subscription.
  3. Testing with live card numbers you do not own. Use your own accounts or vendor-supplied test data.
  4. Assuming a brand match means a valid card. BIN tables describe ranges, and ranges change.
  5. Skipping the contract review. Logging, retention, and resale clauses matter as much as accuracy.

FAQ

How many digits does a BIN test use?

Six is the traditional minimum. Eight is the practical standard now, because several networks issue eight-digit ranges. A provider that only handles six digits will return wrong or empty results for part of your traffic.

Can BIN data alone block fraud?

No. It is one signal. Prepaid or commercial flags, country mismatch, and brand information are useful inputs to a rules engine, but they do not replace velocity checks, device data, or authentication.

Real-time lookups or a batch file?

Use real-time for checkout and authorization flows where a decision is needed in milliseconds. Use batch for reconciliation, reporting, and portfolio analysis where the extra cost of per-lookup calls is hard to justify.

Should I test with my own customer data?

Only where you have a lawful basis and a data processing agreement in place. A vendor sandbox and your own test accounts are the safer route for an initial evaluation.

The bottom line

Shortlist two or three providers, run the same sample through each, and score match rate, latency, and field coverage on a single sheet. The provider that wins on your data is the one worth buying from.
