Adyen Test Card: Numbers, Test Mode, and 3DS

Short answer

An Adyen test card is a card number that works in Adyen's test environment. Adyen publishes the numbers in its own documentation. The numbers pass format checks and move no money. They do not work in live mode.

What the numbers are

Adyen lists test cards per scheme: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Diners, JCB, and Maestro. The Visa default is 4111 1111 1111 1111. The Mastercard default is 5555 4444 3333 1111. Confirm the full list in Adyen's test card reference before you code against it.

The other fields are loose. Expiry date: any future date. CVC: any 3 digits, or 4 digits for American Express. Cardholder name: any value. These fields pass format checks, so they do not block a test.

Where to get them

The source of record is docs.adyen.com, under test cards and test payment methods. Do not copy numbers from blogs or old forum posts. Adyen adds cards for new features and drops old ones.

How to run a test payment

  1. Create a test account, or switch the API key to test.
  2. Send the payment to the test endpoint with a listed test card.
  3. Read the result code in the response.

Some test cards trigger a set outcome: authorised, refused, error, or a 3D Secure challenge. Adyen maps each card to a result. Check the result code table before you write assertions.

3D Secure test cards

Adyen lists separate cards for 3DS1 and 3DS2 flows. The 3DS2 cards ask for a password in the challenge window. The docs give the password. If a card returns a challenge and no password is set, the test stalls.

Rules

  • Test cards do not work with a live API key.
  • Never put real card numbers in a test system.
  • Do not ship test card numbers to production code.

PCI rules cover test data. Real card numbers in a dev database put you in scope for card data storage. That adds audit cost and breach risk. Use test numbers.
