Gift Vouchers

Traditional gift vouchers are printed paper gifts available in set values that can be spent in specific stores. Open-loop, semi-open loop, and closed-loop are often terms used when referring to gift vouchers. All gift cards sold via our partners’ websites are closed loop. This means that the gift card can only be spent at a single brand location, for example, an Xbox voucher can only be spent at Xbox etc.

3D Secure Test Card v8 Guide: Which Sandbox Card to Use

Use your processor's own sandbox cards

The quickest way to a working 3D Secure test setup is to skip third party lists of "v8" cards and take your test numbers straight from the documentation of the processor you integrate with. There is no universal v8 test card. A version number in a card list usually tracks one vendor's own documentation revision, not a card scheme standard. What actually matters is the authentication outcome each number produces in your sandbox: frictionless approval, challenge approval, challenge failure, or authentication unavailable. Choose cards that cover all four, run them through your full checkout flow, and confirm your code branches correctly on each result.

What to look for in a 3DS test card set

  • Documented outcome per card. The listing should state whether the number triggers a challenge, passes frictionless, or returns a failed authentication.
  • Protocol coverage. At least one card for 3DS2 and, if you still accept legacy traffic, one for 3DS1.
  • Reachable failure modes. Expired card, insufficient funds, do not honor, and authentication failure should each be testable.
  • Liability shift behavior. You want a card that returns a successful authentication so you can inspect the ECI value your gateway stores.
  • Issuer simulation. If you sell across borders, test an issuer outside the US when your processor offers one.

Parameter bands that change the result

Sandbox outcomes often depend on fields other than the card number, so vary these in bands rather than one value at a time.

  • Amount. Keep test charges small, commonly 0.50 to 1.00 in the currency's minor unit. Some simulators use amount ranges to decide between frictionless and challenge.
  • Authentication status. Expect values of Y (authenticated), N (not authenticated), U (unavailable), and A (attempted). Confirm which ones your integration accepts before granting the shift.
  • ECI values. Visa and Mastercard use different codes, so log what arrives instead of hardcoding a single number.
  • Expiry and security code. Any future date and any three digit value work unless you are testing AVS or CVC rejection rules.
  • Channel. Test browser and in app flows separately, because they map to different 3DS message versions and challenge window settings.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Testing with live card numbers. PCI DSS forbids real account data in non production environments, and buying, selling, or trading card data is a crime in the US and most other jurisdictions. Use only numbers your processor publishes for sandbox use.
  • Hardcoding sandbox numbers into production configuration or fixtures that ship to customers.
  • Assuming parity across processors. The same number can mean different things at different gateways.
  • Skipping the authentication unavailable path, which is the branch fraud teams ask about most.
  • Ignoring exemption handling such as transaction risk analysis or low value exemptions, which can bypass a challenge entirely.
  • Testing only the approval path and never the decline, timeout, or user abandoned challenge flows.

FAQ

Is there one official v8 3D Secure test card?

No. Card networks do not publish a numbered test card series. The numbering comes from individual gateway documentation, so treat any list as vendor specific and check the date on it.

3D Secure Test Card V7: The Ultimate Guide to Purchase

Do these test cards work in production?

No. Sandbox numbers are declined by live acquiring systems, and attempting to pass them through live processing is a testing error, not a shortcut.

Why do I get a frictionless flow when I expected a challenge?

Risk based rules, the charge amount, device data quality, and the simulator's configuration all influence the decision. Change one variable at a time and log the three DS method URL and transaction status.

Can I reuse the same number at another processor?

Sometimes the number is recognized elsewhere, but behavior is not guaranteed. Rebuild your test matrix for each gateway you enable.

Where can test card data come from lawfully?

From your payment provider's sandbox documentation only. Any source offering real card data for sale is illegal and unsafe to touch.
